So that leaves us with approximately $3.8 million for the final three roster spots.  I bet we add one player who has two years or less experience, leaving us with $3 mil for the final two spots.  This could allow us to use not the full BAE, but a portion of it, and allow us to pay one player at over the minimum.  Alternatively, it would give us room to re-sign one of Pietrus, Dooling, or Daniels at over the minimum.

I think we should hold a good chunk of that money.  Every year decent players are bought out at the trade deadline.

Boris Diaw, for instance, did some very good things for San Antonio this season.

I'd like to hold onto the chance of getting our own "Boris Diaw".

Plus, you never know what trade might come up at the deadline which works within the allowable percentages but has us taking on extra salary.

The best thing is other players/free agents won't see us as a bunch of old guys who'd rather not come here since our windows shutting. If we make a deep playoff run who knows the Finals or take it all guys will want to come and play here the future is looking bright.

Update: Lee apparently starts at an even 5M with 225k annual raises.

Something to ponder . . in an alternate universe with alternate contracts and salaries . . . if the sequence of events were different and the Courtney Lee situation was last year and the David West situation was this year, would West have wanted to come to Boston with our new younger team?

Great point about guys wanting to play here now that they see a younger roster.

I disagree with that.  Firstly, we've tried that multiple times.  Remember when Troy Murphy was going to push us over the top?  Sasha?  Marbury?  Every year we try, and it doesn't work.

Secondly, we're at 12 players on the roster right now, and we'll have 11 to start the season with thanks to Bradley being out.  Melo would be best served in Portland, and the same is probably true of Joseph.  That brings us all the way down to 9 players to start the season with, assuming no one gets hurt in training camp, which will probably happen.  If we want to leave open enough to sign our best non-vet training camp invite with, I'm totally down with that.  But we need bodies to fill out the roster, and I'd rather get them now than in March.

Boston has consistently gone into the season with only 14 players the last couple of years to provide flexibility down the road.  With Bradley out for a bit, they may rethink that this year, but not necessarily.  You could send Melo to Maine and go with 13, or keep everyone with the big club to get them acclimated to the Celtic way, and then send the guys who need it to Portland once Bradley returns.  That is more the way they have used the Red Claws in the past, rarely have they sent someone there to start the year.  It somewhat depends if they sign another big or not as to whether Melo may be needed on the end of the bench or not.

The FA crop this season is pretty rich. I don't see anyone better being available later in the year.

A tad overpaid.

Lee is only worth around $3.5 to $4 million per annum. So he did well for himself in this deal.

Not a great contract but it's as good as Danny could have done given the level of interest in Lee in this year's free agent market. I don't think he would have been able to sign him for less than $5mil per annum on a long (4 year) contract.

It's a trade-able deal but it'll never have much value.

You may be right and probably are.  But leaving open a roster spot allows for a potential 2-for-1 trade or a potential 3-for-2 trade and the like.
