It's likely that the contract didn't go through if he flunked his physical. If it did, though, is the exemption still half his salary? Because that could be up to $4.5M.
I believe the contract would be voided if he didn't pass the physical. Don't think the injury exception would come into play.
My thoughts too. I have a suspicion that his contract will NOT be finalized and will NOT go through due to this. I bet we know by tomorrow. 9M + 9M luxury tax is an awfully big financial hit for an owner unless you truly believe you have a title contender.
Certainly they wouldn't want to pay the money if Green isn't able to play. The problem is replacing Green with the vet minimum.
Let me see if I understand this right. If his contract is void Boston loses him and gets nothing to spend for a replacement because they are over the cap, but if they except the contract and put him on IR they will get 4.5 million to replacement.
To me if I was Danny/Owners and feal this is the Big 3's last go round wouldnt you chose option B. I mean it is a lot to spend but in the end you will still have the rights to Jeff next year ( if healthy ) and you will have 4.5 million this year to spend on maybe AK47.
I'm not sure how the injury exemption works, but I don't think $4.5 mil would be enough to sign AK, unless he was being as charitable as he was in Russia (where apparently he's donating all his salary to charity).
Regardless, I don't think it would apply. The whole reason Jeff Green is going through these physicals is to finalize his contract. If he fails the physical, I can't see why the contract wouldn't be voided.
well, i think the suggestion is that the celtics could choose to honor the contract despite the physical, and just have jeff not play.
i disagree that ownership would consider paying a player $9 million and take an equal hit in luxury tax, without any insurance (since they knew about it prior to the contract), just to have a chance to pay another player $4.5 million, with an equal hit in luxury tax, all for a relatively small chance at a championship.
(that's $27 million for a shot a championship, and we're talking about a bench player . . . not happening)
plus, i just don't think the league would give a team an injury exception if they signed a player that they knew wouldn't be able to play. it just doesn't work that way. no, if green is a no-go we're going to have to rely on a veteran minimum signing of somebody like DeShawn Stevenson or maybe Michael Redd.
