The Hornets should be demanding the Clippers or two future first round picks in exchange for signing and trading David West.
They should be demanding it, and Ainge should tell them "I'll give you a protected first, take it or leave it, cuz West could always leave for nothing. N O T H I N G." Then hang up the phone.
One first round pick isn't worth taking on all that extra salary.
Not unless Jermaine O'Neal is agreeing to waive all money owed to him. In which case, one pick would be more than satisfactory. Maybe even the Cavs second rounder (from Erden trade) would suffice.
Basically what NO should be looking to do is pick up Bradley for kicks, the best 1st they can, and $3 million to pay JO (about half his salary). Then even if they cut JO, it only costs them $3 million out of pocket, about the price of a 1st rounder, and they get Bradley for free. That's the equivalent of 2 1sts for the price of one.
Or they can flip JO to a contender, which is likely...Perhaps LA to make up for losing Gasol?
Agreed -- Bradley + a future first is equivalent of two firsts
That would/should be an acceptable trade package for New Orleans.
The Hornets don't have much leverage here. They are not resigning David West. They can't take on any salary otherwise the Chris Paul trade will not be able to be made. David West might have interest from other teams in the Hornets division, so all the Hornets are doing is facilitating the move to Boston, they don't want any money coming on to the books. I do think they will get an unprotected 2nd round pick, for their efforts. This happens all the time. The Mavs are doing the same thing with Tyson Chandler. They are signing and trading him to the knicks for nothing in return, not an unusual occurance.
They Hornets do have leverage.
They have to take back salary in order to facilitate this trade. If they didn't have to take back salary, or they were taking back quality players (like J.Green or even B.Bass instead of JO), then they would have little to no leverage here.
But they are choosing to pay $4-6 million out of their pocket to make this trade happens so they'll need a return on that investment. Which, if the package is JO + S.Pavlovic, should be additional draft picks.
They have no reason -- and actually have reasons against (the $4-6 million) -- making this trade without receiving more incentive from the C's.
