I get that but, it is basically 1) get something in return for David West from Boston or 2) David West signs with another team and NOH gets nothing.
Why are those their only choices?  Other teams could put together sign and trade offers for West the same way the Celtics can.
Yeah, but West has to agree to them.
True, but I'm just saying that we're probably not the only team that West would agree to go to in an S&T scenario and that it's not likely that the choice is either accept Boston's offer or receive nothing.  Seems like a false choice.
Apparently Indiana is also an option for him, if West has his choices narrowed to us or them then it could be compensation from us or nothing.

This is the main point, he has an agreement in place with the Celtics by all accounts and the thing that has been holding it up is finding a 3rd team for JO. If its just JO going to New Orleans then Stern may veto, since it would hurt the selling value of the Hornets. This is why leagues should not be allowed to buy a team. The Expos went through the same crap when Loria scammed his way into South Florida.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
A healthy JO on an expiring contract is a real bargain to a contending team. I obviously don't know the intricacies of the situation, but it seems like the Heat, Mavericks, etc (as previously discussed) would jump at the opportunity to acquire JO.

ya, and as sad as it may be, JO is still one of the best centers out there that a team who needs a quality big man could get.

after Chandler,Nene, dalembert the list of centers out there is pretty slim/bad

Just have to be patient and let it happen. You have to remember David West is a Free agent so its not like he can be traded to another team. If he REALLY wants to come here Danny can make it happen. A couple things really make me believe this happens today

1)Noone has heard from Danny Ainge in the last couple days, that makes me believe he is up to something
2)Jermaine O'Neal seemed resigned to the fact yesterday that he knew something was coming.
3)Doc announcing that KG was playing more 5 next year signaled to me that the PF position was going to be deep
4) We haven't heard West's name mentioned with any other teams other than the Pacers late last night, and that was under the possibility they would be interest only if the Celtics deal fell through.

Just be patient it will happen.

Two things I haven't heard anyone mention.

1. If JO ends up getting traded to a non-contender, what are the odds he arranges a buyout and works his way back to Boston in 30 days (that's still allowed, right)?  We'd still need a center as much as anyone, and he's still better than someone we'd be able to get with the mini-MLE.  They would obviously be VERY careful not to even hint this publicly, but sure seems to me like a possibility.

2. Haven't heard anyone mention whether David West and Chris Paul are particularly good friends, after playing together for so long.  Might David West be to Chris Paul what Ray Allen was to KG - the incentive to acquiesce to a later Boston trade?  They've had some success together, and David West is still (relatively) young; maybe Chris Paul is more willing to give Boston a shot if he knows at least David West will be around in 2012.  Trade would probably have to wait until the season started, might need some of the recently-signed players to go alongside Rondo in a deal.

1. New rules mandate a one year waiting period for a player to return to a team in that scenario.

2. I believe this has been the assumption Ainge has been operating under. Paul has publicly referred to West as "his brother." Get West, and then convince Paul to come in free agency (assuming a deal for both can't be struck).

This roller coaster of emotions the past 72+ hours is killing me.

First we are near a trade for CP3 then LA of all teams swoop in and trade for him. Then the trade is killed. Then they are working on a new deal to trade for him. Then we are going to sign David West and LA drops out of the CP3 talks. Then Boston may be after both CP3 and West and now our chances of landing West are 'slim'.

Why would West want to go to the Pacers...he said he wants to take less money to go to a contender...

exactly...what else could produce a greater high than hearing a rumor that BOTH paul and west are celtics-bound? ha, ha.
