Really feel bad for Wakefield.  This whole quest for 200 thing seems to be in everybody's head.  Anytime he starts, either he plays awfully or the rest of the team does.

Wake really needs to go to the bullpen once Beckett is back in the rotation.  Give him the chance to get a win off a mediocre Lackey or Bedard start.

At the risk of eliciting more eye-rolls, the past couple weeks has underlined my concern regarding our pitching and bullpen.  The Sox seem equally capable of giving up 10 runs as they are of scoring 10 runs.  I can't help questioning the wisdom of trying to win with a lot of hitting and mediocre pitching.

Still, with Beckett, Lester, Bedard, Lackey, and Miller, we at least have a decent starting rotation on paper if everybody can pitch to the best of their abilities in the post-season.  The bullpen isn't too bad, either, as long as Matt Albers doesn't play and Dan Wheeler doesn't see too much time.  Aceves, Bard, and Pap are basically our only decent arms back there, but perhaps Wakefield and Buchholz can bolster the 'pen.

At this point I could see the Sox losing in their first series the way they did against the Angels in '09, or I could see them getting hot and going all the way.

(now that I've made this post, perhaps the Sox will go on a 10 game tear -- here's hoping)

Yes, here's hoping, because while the Sox have been spluttering along the last couple weeks, the Yanks have started to heat up (last two games notwithstanding).

It's beginning to look a lot like the first two weeks again.  The rotation is in shambles...

Still not in panic mode yet.

I'm trying not to be, but there doesn't appear to be much positive to grab onto right now.

You're right, the team basically looks like they did at the start of the season -- hardly any hitting, and the pitching is trick or treat at best.

Looks like Wakefield's lead should be safe for the Sox bullpen tonight.  It's about time.

And the lead keeps growing.

I hope this is the start of something good over the next few weeks, and not the last gasp of a dead and done team....

Sox win, TB loses, Wakefield gets number 200.  Good night.

Indeed, worked out well.

Still, against almost any team but the Blue Jays, giving up 5 runs in the first 3 innings is asking to get creamed, again.

As Cman said, let's hope the offensive explosion is a good sign that the bats are gonna get going again (at least at home).

I'm still really not feeling good about the pitching . . . but until Beckett and Bedard are back, I guess you can't really expect that much.  I suppose this year the team is just going to go as far as the bats take them, since the pitching has never really been consistently great.

Way to carry last night's momentum into today's game.  Already down 2-0.

Lackey has to go down as one of the Boy Wonder's greatest blunders.  Just as they're about to shed one albatross contract, the Sox have another on their hands.

Well, he's settled down a little bit.  Sox up 3-2 in the bottom of the 4th now.

Of course a rare decent game from Lackey would get undermined by an implosion from the bullpen.  Of course.

How is it that our pitching is so bad?
