Is there a better backup catcher in the league!

Tek's had a nice year and has to get some credit for Salty's development.
Yup

indeed. it seemed like a position of weakness at the start of the season, but Jarson Varitamacchia has been very good for us.

I'm not sure I have ever seen a pitcher get squeezed in the first inning of a game even as close to as much as Jon Lester has been in this first inning against the Yankees.

This ump is ridiculous. He has squeezed Lester out of 4 Ks easily and been responsible for at least an extra 25 pitches throw. Horrid strike zone for Lester compared to that of Burnett.

This might be the most one side balls and strikes called ump I have ever seen. He squeezed Alves to extend the 7th and then squeezed Bard to extend the inning and finally Bard has to put it over the middle because this ump is ridiculous and suddenly the Yanks up 2.

PATHETIC UMPIRING BEHIND THE PLATE.

this is why i really don't understand the need for an umpire to call balls and strikes.

when you watch a baseball game they have a graphic that shows you whether the ball was in a standard strike zone.  they clearly have technology to call strikes / balls.  the ump is good for calling check swings and plays at the plate, but the rest, it seems, can be done better through the use of technology.

same could be said for many facets of many sports...the human element is so ingrained in the experience of the games.
