Enough with the "white" comments regarding Harangody.  Our rules state:

It is neither necessary nor appropriate to reference a player's race when commenting on that player's play or role.
Roy, I agree that you walk on egg shells whenever race is brought up, especially with basketball, but there's also no denying the stereotype among many that any white NBA player who isn't European and doesn't have a million tatoos is considered a stiff by the majority of fans until proven otherwise.  Not racist at all...just an observation... and I think an accurate one.

Really?

I am sure you were trying to say something but look at the words highlighted.

To build on what wdleehi said, we simply have a no tolerance policy for racial stereotypes.  If you don't like a player's athleticism (regardless of skin color) say so, rather than using a stereotype as a shortcut.

The thing about stereotypes is that they're never completely accurate.  They lead to the dehumanizing of people by simply focusing on their physical characteristics, and making (often inaccurate) assumptions about them.  (Brent Barry, anyone?)

Anyway, as wdleehi said, if people want to discuss this issue, they should start a new thread in the Comments and Remarks forum.  For now, this discussion is tabled, and everyone is asked to abide by the rule.

Harangody used to get absolutely torched by Tyler Hansborough in one on one match ups in college ball.

Take that for what it's worth.

harangody never played hansborough in college
Link

Wrong. Here's a box score that refutes your claim.

my bad.. didnt think i saw a game against unc.. but he shot fifty percent in the on game they played... thats getting torn up in college??

If he'd read the recap he would have seen that LH was suffering from flu symptoms including a fever and an upset stomach.  I watched the game and you could tell he was really struggling physically.  As I recall Tyler actually mentioned it in the post game interview.

So, LH had 13pts 7 reb 2 ast & 3 blks playing against the POY and future national champions while sick as a dog.  Not a great example of why the guy supposedly sucks.

I wonder what the Celtics team is thinking right now? KG Rondo PP RAY AND PERK are scratching their heads over this 52nd pick. 6'7 is not going to stop Bynum or Gasol DANNY!!!!
I agree - way to address our size problems that were present in the Finals, Danny.

you don't draft for need, you draft the best player available, even if he's white, that doesn't mean he's Scal
I completely agree - which is why drafting Harangody when Willie Warren was still available makes no sense.  Warren is a lottery talent, and I don't care if he fits or not, at 52, you have to take him.  He was clearly the best player available.

Well, draft express gave a few reasons why everyone in the NBA may have passed on Warren in the first round....

- Few players in recent memory have seen their NBA draft stock and overall reputation take as big of a hit as Willie Warren’s has this past season. Considered a likely top-10 pick had he elected to declare a year ago, Warren decided to stick around for another season and has seen his stock plummet to the point that it’s anyone’s guess where he might be picked at this point.

Some terrible losses early in the season, being benched in one game for undisclosed reasons, getting called out by his head coach in the national media at one point for his immature behavior, a nagging ankle injury that seemingly won’t heal, an untimely bout of mononucleosis–it’s tough to see how this season could have possibly gone any worse for the super talented sophomore.

Plus being a 6'2" sg and averaging 3.8 turn overs a game may not have helped either.

In any case, Luke groundplodder is the property of the celtics.

I have only seen him play one game, period.

What I saw was a very very hard working, smart player who has a range of ok-to-good offensive tools. His height and energy made him a good college rebounder.

But I also noticed that he is slow and not athletic enough to be an everyday NBA player. I would worry a lot about his man to man defense in the NBA were I his coach.

Off the bench against NBA bench players, he might survive in the right team system. He did average about 22 points and 9 rebounds a game, so he not completely untalented.

Heck, he was picked at 52nd? If he winds up being the 10th or 11th guy for the celtics, that is not bad.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Personally I like the pick.  Anyone who's first team All Big East for 3 Years can play.  Whether it translates to being a good pro is something we're going to find out but he's probably got a better chance of sticking than a lot of the guys taken from pick 40 on.

I can't believe people think that any center picked #19 or later in last night's draft will be good enough to contribute in the Finals this year.

Probably no rookie drafted this year will have an impact on the championship next year...even a lottery pick!

The same type of thinking that went into drafting Leon Powe and Ryan Gomes went into taking Luke Harangody (olders guys with big numbers who are in between positions for the NBA).  You are drafting at straws this late in the draft no matter what but it is hard to question the approach (unless you think Powe and Gomes were bad picks too).

The thing is if he beats out Sheldon Williams, you will have to call this pick a success.  You can't really expect anything more can you?
My feeling is at #52 if he can be a ryan gomes type player its a win.  If he can be trade fodder like the 2 guys sent to knicks its a win.  If he doesn't make the roster its expected.  I'd rather give a roster spot to maybe a guy like Luke for practice then a guy who might be athletic but offers nothing more.  At least a sound team player can help at practices for your starters to play against.
