How does this trade make sense for us in the long run. I mean, Nate is definitely a player we would want to have on our team, but the catch is we can't re-sign him next year without using the MLE. Is this correct, Roy Hobbs?

I'm not Hobbs but I'm fairly certain that's true.

Trading him means his bird rights are lost, meaning we couldn't sign him to anything more than a vet. minimum contract without using at least part of the MLE (we already used the LLE on Daniels for this season).

It's almost certain we wouldn't retain his services after this season.

Bird rights come along in a trade.

LARRY BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is the best known one. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA, and this exception is a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. This exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, up to the player's maximum salary. The player essentially must play for three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. This means a player can obtain "Bird rights" by playing under three one-year contracts, a single contract of at least three years, or any combination. It also means that when a player is traded, his Bird rights are traded with him, and his new team can use the Bird exception to re-sign him. These contracts can be up to six years in length. A player can receive raises up to 10.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract. This exception is known as the Larry Bird exception because the Celtics were the first team allowed to exceed the cap to keep their own free agent, and the player happened to be Bird.

Note: There are some subtleties to the three-year tenure requirement.

There is one more limit to the maximum salary that can be given using the Larry Bird exception. If the player was a first round draft pick and just completed the third year of his rookie scale contract, but his team did not exercise its option to extend the contract for the fourth season, then this exception cannot be used to give him a salary greater than he would have received had the team exercised their fourth year option. In other words, teams can't decline the option in order to get around the salary scale and give the player more money.

Starting January 10 of each season, this exception begins to reduce in value.

As much as I love Eddie, I can see more and more how his game is one dimensional. I got sick when Jason Williams went the distance in 4 seconds and Eddie hammered him in the head.

TA has got it going lately, and would run with Nate.
Maybe Westcoast offense if you put in Rondo, TA, Nate, KG and Sheed.

IF (major "if") a 1st round pick has to be added then i'd pass...

at one point the knicks were going to just cut this guy (if the rumors were true) so there's now way i'd add a draft pick for him. 

personally, i'd just sit back and watch the waiver wire and buyouts following the trade deadline...  nate is a nice player, but for the limited amount of time he'll get on the court i'd just as soon stick with eddie house and roll the dice.
