For the next 2-3 years I think this one is a no-brainer (YES). I love Ray Ray, but Ellis at 25 and 26 is going to be a better player than Ray at 35 and 36.
I think the questions are:
* Does he meld with Rondo?
* Will he prevent us from "blowing it up" in a couple of years?
It's intriguing at least. The athleticism of a Rondo / Ellis backcourt would be something to watch, that's for sure.
With them both on the court, put Randolph at C and a couple fillers at the 3 and 4, and they could run a constant fast break.
no thanks
Why?
Looking at this from a negative point of view: 5 years, $55 million after this year, for an undersized shooting guard who can't shoot, who turns the ball over way too much and who rubs people in his organization the wrong way.
Monta is a heck of a scorer, and Danny loved him in high school. However, he needs the ball in his hands to succeed, and there's a real concern about how he'd fit with Rondo.
Undersized? Yes. Can't shoot? Eh...shooting stroke needs work. When GS beat us in December, I remember Ellis dropping 30 on us and shooting above 50% with most of the shots being jumpers.
I think he needs work with consistency, but the guy can flat out score from everywhere, especially around the basket.
IF He and Rondo could mesh, plus we could get Randolph out of this, why not? We would essentially have 4/5 positions set for the next 5-7 years - Rondo,Ellis,SF,Randolph,Perkins
