Marbury is a decent shooter over his career. He's not Ray Allen but he has been able to stick a jumper over his entire career.
I don't see a better alternative than someone already familiar with the team, plays, system, and coaching staff who can play. No we're not getting all-star Marbs but this is a guy who can definately be competent in a back-up role..

Dave Bing was a decent shooter over his career too, but that career is over.  Same with Marbury.  What Marbury did 5 years ago is irrelevant.

So past coinflips do or don't predict future coinflips?  I'm having trouble integrating this with your last analogy.

He was crap last year, so the odds are that he will be crap again this year.

It's ridiculous to assume that he's somehow going to rediscover his game.  He isn't.

I'd much rather have a player like Kevin Ollie.  He's make the right basketball plays, play decent defense, won't turn the ball over and he'll make his free throws.  Plus he's 6-5 so he can cover sg's when paired with House. He'll also be a solid citizen in the locker room and in the community, and he won't cost you the LLE.

I'm hoping that this rumor was started by Marbury's agent in a desperate attempt to stir up some interest.  I hope everyone realizes that NO OTHER TEAM either in the NBA or in Europe has shown the slightest interest in Marbury.  That ought to tell you something right there.

Remember when MJ came back after sitting out a year?  Was he the same MJ that first year that he came back?

In '93 he shot 49% from the field and averaged 32.6 pts per game.

In '94 in the 17 games that he came back, he averaged 26.9 and shot 41%

I '95 he was back averaging 30.4 pts per game and shooting 49%

From this we can learn 2 things:

1. Marbury is not Jordan
2. Even for Jordan, its hard to come back after missing most of the season and be the normal player that you are.

Give the guy a break.  You are judging him on a playing in a difficult situation.  The weight of the world was on his shoulders.  His primary goal last year was fitting in, and looking like a model citizen.  He did that, and he even had some good moments.  By signing this year, he only has to focus on basketball, with a full training camp.  I think he will have an outstanding year, and be challanging Rondo for minutes.

Let's not forget, that at his peak, he was, unquestionably, a better player than Rondo is at this stage of his career.  Not saying that he is better now, but at one point of his career, he was.

I'd rather he complains about playing time, hits on all the women in the Celtics front office, and goes 10 and 4 everynight...

It's better than model citizen Starbury thats afraid to shoot.

(this is an exaggeration obv but you get my point)

I think I'd prefer Ollie too (mostly due to the character question) -- especially at the vet minimum.  However, I am nowhere near the notion that the difference between Ollie and Marbury means the difference between contending and not.  Neither will be difference makers and one is unlikely to win you more games than the other.  All you want is 5 to 10 minutes of few mistakes.

Ya Kevin Ollie, because just the other day I was thinking I wish we had another UConn player on our roster for Donny to talk about.  ;)

Serioulsy though I do like Kevin Ollie, haven't heard any talk or speculation about him and the C's though.

Pardon me while I throw up.  It this is true, it's a terrible move that Ainge will regret.

Honestly, how?  If Marbury really becomes that big of a problem, they can cut him.

And then what?  If you sign Marbury, it means you passed on all of the better alternatives that are out there.  By the time Marbury finishes stinking it up again, the good veteran backups will have signed elsewhere. It's called opportunity cost. If you do one thing, it precludes other moves.

Stephon Marbury is the best back up PG out there. He is better than some of the starting PGs out there.

I totally agree with your point as well.  Produce on the court.  Do what you need too off of it.

At this point Stephon is definitely a backup, however you're not being honest with yourself if you don't admit that the guy will be a better backup this coming year than he was last season. He will have KG back in the lineup, Sheed added to the mix, and will know the plays better. He will have another training camp under his belt with hopefully some added work in the gym shooting jumpers to regain his confidence. There is no WAY the guy won't be a better version than last season, and compared to Gabe, or anyone else that is available at that price you aren't going to find better value for the dollar. He will not ever be what he was in his prime, however he will be much closer than what we saw the last few games of the season.

All you guys refuting this were the ones that were making these same arguments for bringing back Sam Cassell last year. The difference was Sam was really old and more concerned with getting his than running the second unit. Marbury showed us last season he was looking for his teammates first.

Those are the reasons why I wanted him back at PG. He WILL be better this season. MUCH better. He will have training camp, KG, SHeed, and Daniels. He will be in better shape. He will have 82 games to get ready for the play-offs. He will have a greater comfort level with the system.

This is a great move for The C's if/when it happens.

If I want to watch my backup pg go out there and suck, it had better be for the vet minimum.  :P

Heh, same response, only mine didn't come until I was done banging my head off my keyboard trying to clear my vision until the thread title read differently.  Sadly, this didn't work.

Looking at the talent pool available at the vet min or LLE at PG, thats going to happen no mater who we sign. I'd rather it be a guy who just opened up for 3 hours about how much he loves it here and loves his teammates and fans than some other guy like lue.

My stance remains the same. as long as he understands its a 8-10 minute a night job behind rondo and wants the LLE or less, i'm very cool with him as a backup for depth.

Anybody who thinks that the Star can't play is crazy.    How many players hit 5 shots in a row in the 4th Qtr of Game 5 of a playoff series? And some of you may say it was only 5 shots, but that was one of the rare opportunites last year where Steph got enough playing time and a chance to take over the game for a few minutes.  Just put the Banner up.   LETS GO FOR #19!! ITS ALL OVER!!

Starbury can still play. He is a good insurance pg just in case rondo gets injured or gets stuck in a traffic jam.

If I had a dollar for every tissue that has been wasted on Brickowski crying about Starbury, I would chip in an extra million to bring him back to the C's.
