For all the complaining about Teixeira being all about the money I ask; What should he care about? It's not like he should have any allegiance to any particular fanbase or ownership. The "love" he's been shown from the fans and various organizations goes only as far as his bat can continue to take him.

Look at our own "Fenway faithful". Thay booed David Ortiz in the playoffs. DAVID ORTIZ! Just ask Bronson Arroyo his thoughts on the pros and cons of signing the hometown discount.

Myself? In Teixeira's shoes, I would probably go for the most money/years at the cost of playing on a crummy team. Consider me the Shawn Marion of Celtics Blog. I really do hope the Sox sign Tex, though. I have a number of trade ideas on how to ship that dead weight Mike Lowell out of town.  :P

you have to consider more than salery though. Endorsment deals for a terrable team playing in a non-baseball market are not worth as much as being a star of one of the top 5 teams in baseball.

also, its deadspin and all but...

Good point on the endorsements angle. If that's what puts this deal over the top, then fine with me. I was just more responding to the attitude of " This guy only cares about the money. What a shmuck." that always seems to come up when there's a money dispute involving a high profile player. It tends to be a one-way street.

Well I think being on a winning team is rewarding.  how much do you think the marlins players like going to a stadium and having 8000 people there?  enjoying your job is rewarding.  endorsements will be greater on a team like Boston because there is a larger local fanbase as well as national fanbase.  Additionally, people are overlooking things like playoff shares.  How many times in the next 8 years will the Sox be in the playoffs?  how bout the nationals?  So more cash coming there.  Also, if we believe 9/180 and 8/170, You would almost have to think 8/170 is better.  he will then be a FA at 36 where he could like get a 2-3 year deal.  at 37 coming out of the nationals offer, he may only get a 1 year deal.

the only plus I see for him being in Washington is his family, and a larger number, even though in the long run that number with all other facts is likely smaller.

Can't say I'm shocked by this development.

Yankees on the verge of signing Teixeira

By Jon Heyman, SI.com

The Yankees are on the verge of signing Mark Teixeira, SI.com has learned, beating out the rival Red Sox for the free-agent slugger's services.

Terms of the proposed agreement for Teixeira, who hit .308 with 33 home runs and 121 RBIs in 2008, are unclear.

The final four teams in the race to sign Teixeira were the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals and Yankees.

The Red Sox threw a curveball late last week when owner John Henry announced they were no longer "going to be a factor'' following a meeting at Teixeira's Dallas-area house. But after a little while, it became clear that Henry only meant that they intended not to up their bid, not that they were pulling out of the derby entirely.

While Henry's team remained in the running, Angels owner Arte Moreno pulled out for real on Sunday, announcing they had given up the chase. Moreno had submitted a proposal believed to be for $160 million at the Winter Meetings and hadn't moved from that initial offer.

While there were rumors that the Severna Park, Md., product preferred to be on the East Coast, there never was any real evidence of that. He loved his time in Anaheim and continued to live in the Dallas area, so those suggestions may have been overplayed.

The Yankees remained in contact with the Teixeira camp, but after spending $243.5 million on star starting pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, they didn't appear anxious to be the market setter

Pete Shepherd on WEEI just said that ESPN is reporting that Texeira signed with the Yankees. :-X

like yell hate stated money counts alot but the job has to be rewarding as well. Teixeras sort of enjoyment would be alot of money plus having an opportunity to win compared to say cal ripkin who enjoyed good money he deserved and be nothing but loyal to his team through thick and thin.

In any case Teixera could go to the lowly nationals for a bit more money and be closer to home but i doubt that will happen(only way if nationals upped it to 200 million). There is a reason why teixera wanted to leave texas in a hurry.

lastly i'd be suprised but not stunned if the yankees somehow got him. Their payroll will trim a good amount next year and its not a bad idea to build your team around sabathia and teix.

yea espn is reporting Texeria signed with the Yanks. Now what? Do the sox go after a young catcher? Is Manny a possibility ? although I hate how Manny acted here, you can't argue with 2 world series rings and we definitely missed his Bat in the playoffs, What if he was willing to sign a 1 year 25 mil deal would you do it if you were the sox ?

I love the redsox for life, but its getting a ridiculous how things are running up there
Yea, I know what you mean...It sucks contending for the World Series every year and having one of the deepest organizations in the league. I'm thinking about becoming a Pirates fan.
Very funny! TP.

I'm really not sure what triboy's trying to get at here. Why would you trade Lowell unless you already had Teixeira? I'm sure if we didn't sign Tex, that Lowell would be much happier staying in Boston knowing that he might have been traded, than actually being traded. But in the end, this is a business, and Lowell and all the other players know that. Trades happen. You can't run a $700+ million organization by basing decisions people's feelings.

I understand that they have money to spend since Mussina has retired and Pavano is off their books...

But I mean, where in the hell are they getting all this money?

At least if the Yankees don't win it all this year it'll be that much sweeter.  Cause honestly, with these signings and that roster, the Yanks should be absolutely ashamed of themselves if they don't win the world series

You're forgetting Abreau and Giambi, plus next season Damon's off the books.

I'm probably forgetting some names too.

Edit: Also, they're the Yankees.

I still don't think the Yankees have the starting pitching to win it all. Sabathia ISN'T clutch. The sox beat the hell out of him in the playoffs a few years ago, Burnett is injury prone, Jaba imploded against the Indians a few years ago in the playoffs. Plus how much longer can they expect Mariano to be a dominant closer?

So I guess there was a mystery team after all.  :P

After what happened with A-Rod, I'm not sure how anyone could be surprised by this.

But as you also might know from what happened with A-Rod, it's about who wins the battles in October, not December.

The deal appears to be about what the Sox offered, $170-180 mil.  Appears that Texeira and Boras deeked the Sox for whatever reason.

It's funny I wasn't even that pumped about getting Texeira but instinctively I hate getting duped by the Yankees.

Maybe we can get Manny at the veteran minimum  ;)
Yup
