When is the first time we can pick. Does the 1st pick need to wait until 1? I know that people are allowed to pick earlier than their time but does this go for the start of the draft too? (I had to think of a question to make sure my new avatar works)

I will unlock the thread around 1:20 tomorrow.  He can make his pick anytime in the next 10 minutes.

He brings up a good point.  I would suggest just unlocking it tomorrow morning.  If all picks are done before breakfast, so be it... as long as we give each person time to show up by their time limit.

No need to start that early.  What good does it do to have 8 pick selected before 12 when the 9th pick doesn't show up until 10 minutes before their pick is due?

Allows people at work to have flexibility in this online reality.   You're right that I (being in the west coast) could hold up the entire thing by not making my pick until my 5 minute time limit, but... at least those guys who pick 1-7 can have the potential of making their pick earlier and then not stress about being around in the afternoon.

There is only one draw-back to this...   focusing the draft in that specific time period creates a heightened sense of pressure and chaos.   If I don't have time to evaluate who to pick, I could easily make a mistake and pass on a talented guy.  Additionally, having only 5 minutes to field trade offers and post your choice creates an extremely exciting and dramatic environment... although it's going to push the commish to his wits end.    So having that false sense of reality (much like the real NBA draft) could make it extra exciting.   Whereas, just allowing people to pick early gives people flexibility around their real-life schedules but gives people more opportunity to field trade offers, evaluate whose available and make smart decisions.

Either way I'm content with it.  I'll leave it up to the commish to decide.

Stupid question #90,102 ---- how does one acutally make their pick?  Post reply on the draft board thread? or are we to edit the 1st post (I don't think we can do that..., but who knows).

Yeah he's going to unlock the draft board and then when you see it's your turn you can just say "the Magic select:  Boris Diaw with the 1st round #24 pick"

Or... are we going to be sending our picks to the commish?  You know, that wouldn't be such a bad thing.   If the commish is up for it, it can clear up a lot of the confusion and prevent some madness.  As soon as the commish posts, "With the ___ pick in the draft... the ___ select ___" you can PM the commish with your pick and he can be the one to announce it (like real life)

[dang], and here I was, hoping Diaw would last until #32.  Varejao it is, then.

AP (Orlando) ---- Having consumated their first 2 trades today, The Orlando Magic are thirsty for more action. Discussions with other teams have centered around moving up in the 1st round, out of the 2nd, up in the 2nd, adding a 2nd 1st round pick, and heavy negotiations -- that have unfortunately broken down --- concering a 14th for 15th round swap.

"We'd again like to thank Wdleehi for putting this whole draft together," said Magic GM Gainesville Celtic.  "Furthermore, we wanted to publicly thank LarBird33 for his discussions over IM, they've been really helpful."

Due to GC's low post count, however, the Magic are asking that people IM him for discussions on any of his 10 picks in the first 6 rounds.... AIM: publixsheetcake

I've thought about it... and I want to reiterate the suggestion I just made.

Wdleehi... are you going to be around from 1:30-3:55 tomorrow?   I know it's a lot of responsibility, but you picked the times.   It could make this thing run smoother if we allow you to announce every pick and have time to update the draft board as this thing goes... also preventing mass chaos.

As soon as you announce, "with the X pick the Team A takes ____... Team B is now on the clock"... team B can send you a PM with their choice and you'll have 5 minutes to post it, update the board and move on to the next pick...

the other benefit of this is that if someone says "hey heres a trade i just worked out" it gives you time to announce a holdup and prevent someone from saying "Oh he didnt' make his pick... so I'll consider him skipped and take my guy instead".    If you control the flow, you prevent a lot of craziness in the process.

Having done this last year, I'm going to vote against the PM suggestion.

People should just make their selection in the draft thread in red bold letters.  That way, wdleehi can update at his convenience, rather than constantly having to check PMs, approve trades, update the draft board, and cross out selected players.  It's way, way too much to do in a five minute time period.

I'm currently assisting Rondo and the Raptors, but if you guys really need a replacement GM I could fill in.

Cool.  Right now, the inactive owners seem to be 76ers (15th), Cavs (23rd), and Bucks (28th).  The draft times for those three slots are 2:40pm, 3:20pm, and 3:45pm.  If you can be online at those times, that would be fantastic.

With all the prep work and strategizing my assistant and I have done this week, I would be at a mega disadvantage to him if he left and took an abandoned team...

but I'd still support it  :)

Roy, I'm sure Kw10 would love the opportunity if you want to PM him that information.

No PMs.

The official time is the time on the post in the 'Draft Board'

  • Yup
I haven't been active trading picks for picks (a combination of lack of time and not really "getting" the pros and cons of trading up or down withouit any players on my team yet.

That said, if anyone wants my #1 (26) I will trade it in exchange for trading up in all of the odd rounds from my 26th pick to a significantly higher one.  You would also need to throw me a late even rounded pick.
