How about splitting the MLE between Thomas and Dooling?  Gives the Celtics a PG that can defend smaller SGs.

The Celtics do need an outside shooter off the bench.

I read the first three pages and from those I have to say I liked wdleehi's best.

I would put feelers out there to Denver to see what their intentions are on matching a J.R.Smith offer. They just dumped 7 Million a year for a second rounder, maybe they have no intention of matching on Smith. If they are willing to let him walk away here's my solution:

Split MLE:

Bill Walker - 3 year $1.7 million deal
J R Smith - 5 year $21.2 million deal 4th year player option 5th year team option
That leaves about $1 million left on the MLE which should be saved to entice bought out players here or drawing players out of retirement who won't do it for just the vet minimum.

Tyronne Lue - vet minimum
Theo Ratliff - vet minimum

Maybe not perfect but I think a possible scenario that looks a lot better than Posey at a 4 yr full MLE and scrambling for filler.

I think one of the reasons Denver dumped salary was to be more comfortable offering JR Smith a contract. I suppose they'd match that offer (and I seriously doubt JR Smith would accept it).

I like Roys Hermann suggestion.  I liked him for this squad last year but Detroit scooped him and didn't use him.  He is a more than decent defender, a good offensive threat and shoots well and has no place in Detroits rotation.

Besides him I like Bonzi (he defends well to) and at PG um...House would be my first choice especially if we got Bonzi (he could handle the ball).  or if not Mr. House... I'd gamble on Livingston (considering Pruitt is gonna get some run) I don't dislike Lue though he's not my first choice I also think Steve Francis is not in Houston's long term plans and I'd think with his acceptance of his reduced role he would not be a problem in between Rondo and Pruitt if he has anything left.  I hope we don't overpay for Dooling or somebody like that.

the unicorn, sure no problem.

I think Plan B should be to split the MLE to resign Eddie House and Tony Allen....Give House a raise and a couple years (maybe 2year 5 mil) and give TA some years (maybe 3 years 8-9 mil)....

TA 3 years and 8-9M?  Are you kidding me?
The kid has proven NOTHING and is coming off major injury.  NO NO NO.
Vet min, take it or leave it TA.
We've got two rookies coming up that are slotted to make a lot less and likely can be everything TA has been and more.

Now that we're out of the Posey sweepstakes, we can afford to dole out a reasonable contract to House.  2 years sounds good.  That I agree on.
But the C's also need a backup C and backup wing.  There's not a lot of pie to split here.

If O'Bryant isn't a backup center, then what is he?  I assume that hole is filled.

I quickly skimmed through everyone's posts and there are some very good ideas.   The positive you can take out of not re-signing Posey is that you can throw out a nice offer to a restricted agent and know your not under time contraints waiting to hear what Posey is going to do.  There could be some interesting choices with possibly some old Celts.  For example with Delonte West's situation the Cavs just signed Gibson to a 5 year contract for an undisclosed amount.   If they paid Gibson a good amount they might not do the same for West as they are even deeper than us in the luxury tax.  With Gomes you he would be a nice power 3 to have that can also play the 4.   I remember last year at the time of the KG trade many posters here myself included were sad to see him as part of the trade.   The Wolves are a little overloaded now at the SF/PF spot so maybe there is a chance we can get him.   With regards to Tony Allen I think it's almost a no brainer you re-sign him.   For one I think you can get him on a short cheap contract and 2 if he ever gets complete confidence back in his knee which I think he will I think he is a potential steal for next year.   But the major point of getting him is you don't have to use any of the MLE to sign him so it keeps your teams flexibility.

Getting away ex Celtcs I like the Bonzi idea.  He fits DA's mold of a power 3.   He can still put up big numbers for you off the bench occasionally (about 5 or 6 20 point games off the bench last year for a very good playoff team) and he's probably a better rebounder than Posey.   Not close to Posey's defense but probably better all around scoring and last year's bench had trouble at times scoring.  In fact I would say the second half of the season Powe was maybe our most reliable scorer off the bench/getting to the line it seemed like (before PJ came on board as his playing time was very sporadic after that.)

I would also be in favor of signing Nachbar as he can really help space the floor like Posey can and his all around scoring ability has improved.

Eddie House.  I would definately try to bring him back if nothing other to be the 3 point specialist as I know the Celts want to give Pruitt a chance to sign or take a gamble on another point guard Livingston?  or go the safer route KG's buddy Lue?

Ricky Davis.  I'm not so sure.  He would almost be duplicating TA and we can have TA without using the MLE.

Arroyo and Miles.  I might take a flyer on them for the vet min.  Arroyo won't bite for that offer I think though.

Marbury.  It's looking more and more that he will get boughtout.

Kurt Thomas.  I love the idea of bringing him in but DA has said he is not signing another big man right now.   Maybe midseason he'll make a move.  Alonzo Mourning I believe is still a FA.

I hate to say but Telfair could be a fallback plan as PG but he actually had a decent year last year.

Well after thinking out loud I know Ainge is one for surprises just look at the O'Blount I mean O'Bryant signing that was completely off the radar.

Here is what I'm guessing Ainge will do.  First TA is signed.  Marbury will get bought up and we'll scoop him up even though I'd prefer House's 3 point shooting and spacing on the floor.   As much as I'm not crazy about Marbury having him as a backup kind of intrigues me.  Regardless Pruitt will get a chance to prove himself next year.   We'll offer Gomes part of the MLE that the Wolves don't match as part of a wink wink deal with McHale so Gomes character will off set Marbury's.  If Gomes isn't on board then Bonzi or Miles will the backup plan.  I see the Nets holding onto Nachbar.

Perk/O'Bryant
KG/Powe/Davis
Pierce/Gomes/Scal/Walker
Allen/Allen/Giddens
Rondo/Marbury/Pruitt

If Walker is overseas maybe we'll keep a spot open until midseason

Plan B:

PG-Jacque Vaughan or Keyon Dooling 2yrs at 4-5 million total.

SG-Quinton Ross or Juan Dixon at vets lower level exception.

Big- any one of Malik Allen, Michael Ruffin, Brian Skinner, Jake Voskul at minimum or Kurt Thomas at 2yrs 6 million total for bench big depth.

 or

Eddie House at PG for the same money as the two listed.

Tony Allen as cheap as we can get him.

Chris Anderson for same as bigs above piece of the MLE.

 and

Herrmann on a make good for traing camp.

Darius Miles on a make good for training camp.

Livingston on a make good for training camp.

 Lastly

I have no problem offering Childress the full midlevel with max raises. He is well worth it and Atlanta will be fools not to match. I would also offer Ben Gordon the same but I know the Bulls want some value for him so they match. I think getting solid defensive guys, bigs and reliable shooters off the bench are more important than anything. 8)

Where is Brandon Wallace?  KG called him spiderman in camp last year and some people including myself were hopeful with him at the SF spot.
