I'll be the first to admit it openly:  I'd rather have Maggette than Posey for the same money.

There, I said it.  Celticsblog blasphemy.

I'll say it too actually.

Highly doubtful he accepts an MLE deal. Though he was lobbying earlier for Orlando and he's well aware that they only have the MLE to offer. So, who knows?

I agree guys ... and I just can't help but think; if we thought E House was instant offense how good this guy would look coming off the bench. Our second unit struggled to score at times even with one of the big three out there. I know we'd be losing some D with Posey. I'm trying to think of how I'd rate Maggette's D. If he's average, he might look good or very good in the C's team system.

KG and the system demands good defense.  I wouldn't worry about Maggette playing defense.  Even Ray Allen looked good this year.  If he took the pay cut (unlikely) I'd have tons of confidence he would buy into the system with the 3 stars.

I wish free-agents just gave a quick "no" or a quick "yes", and get it over with. This waiting around annoys me.

I don't know, maybe Maggette was siting at home on 6/17 watching Tony Allen on national TV soaked in champagne, holding the championship trophy and saying "unbuntu baby, unbuntu!" and he was thinking "what the hell? what does this guy have that I don't have? I want me some of that"

I'd rather have Posey.  And my guess is that B-diddy walked away from 18 million to become a Laker, not a Clipper, so I don't see Maggette settling for the MLE.
I think you're right about that. The Baron-to-Clippers story is unlikely to happen. Then what do they do? They resign Maggette at a higher price than the MLE.

Why are there no Arenas to the Clippers stories? They tried before.

How's that? Will the Lakers offer Odom for a S&T? What else? And who resigns Maggette at a higher price? If the Clippers want to sign Davis, they'll have to renounce Maggette's rights.
I just don't think it's likely Baron signs on with the Clippers. It's definitely possible but I don't believe it to be likely, too many things need to happen at the same time.

I think Brick is right with the Clippers part, the Lakers part I don't care too much about and didn't think on .... but it's more likely than him signing with the Clippers - they're not trying to resign Brand while convincing Baron to join ... and they have an NBA Finals team, Kobe Bryant and the two best big men he'll have ever player with to offer Baron right off the bat. That's a good offer. Gaining Odom in a sign and trade is a good deal for the Warriors too.

What can a Odom rental do for the Warriors? I don't think Mullin values Odom more than the cap space. Who cares how good the Lakers are if they don't have salary to sign Baron?

Re: Clippers, I don't see that too many things have to happen: they just need to agree contracts with Baron and Brand. They have enough cap space to offer good enough contracts to both of them - $100M 5/6 years contracts. Brand was probably saying the true when he stated that he was only opting out to give the team more chances of restructuring the salary sheet.

unless both Magette and Posey sign, they will not trade Ray.

But if Magette is signed, when Ray is in his last year, the Celtics can look for the best deal no matter what the position.  They aready have a replacement for Ray on the team.

The Warriors have no big men. Odom the player who's best in a freelancing offense where he can use his talents ... I don't know that sounds like Don Nelson's offense to me. Odom would only be the best defensive big man on their team and their best rebounder from Day One. He fixes a lot of holes.

Odom is a great recovery after losing Baron Davis. Keep him for a year and see if he works out. The Warriors could also get other talent like Jordan Farmer who's value drops to LA once Baron is on board.

The Warriors will be very happy to enter that sign and trade and that's a lot more to like about the Lakers than the Clippers.

It's possible the Clips pull it off but I don't believe it to be likely.

I'm comfortable with that.  I've been saying for a while that Ray would be valuable as an expiring contract in his final year.

But we definitely need to head into this season with the Big 3 together.  Focus on repeating.    I'm all for bringing in Corey Maggette though.  Tony Allen and Posey combined for 43 minutes a game.  I'm sure Maggette could get a ton of minutes on this team if they were both gone.  The year before last he averaged 30 minutes off the bench and averaged 17 points and 6 boards.   He can be effective in the role.

What teams out there have the resources to realistically match a full MLE offer to Maggette or exceed it?

I'm not trying to make a point or anything, just legitimately interested to know what teams out there can make strong offers for Maggette?

This is great news for celticsnation, but its just an offer, and I don't want to get too comfortable with the idea. Although I would like this to go through very much. Wish there's a way to keep Posey as well.

i wonder if Sam Cassell is friends with him.  Might as well use Sam as a recruit... he's gotta be good for something, right?

  • You know my methods, Watson.
just out of curiosity, what is ray allen's family living situation?  did his wife and children move to boston or are they staying out west?

remember something about danny: he is a family man first and foremost and he does give consideration into the individual's situation.  not trying to create something that may not exist, but "what if" ray and danny have had some behind-the-scenes discussions regarding the health issue that ray's child is facing and that could play into ray's future.

again, i'm just throwing stuff out there, but it may not be as far-fetched as we think.  ray was definitely affected by this and he's a pretty strong-willed guy who may even be supportive of such a move now that he has his ring...

the one thing that concerns me about maggette is that he tends to average approximately 10-12 games (thinking in my head, havent looked it up) a season of not playing due to injuries.  if he were playing less minutes as a sixth man, it may help eleveate that a bit.  i do love the thought of pierce and maggette on the wings constantly driving on the defense and drawing fouls.

Can't get enough of those small forwards or shooting guards.

I agree. We don't need Maggette. A more pressing issue is back up center and point guard. And if he comes at the expense of Posey, no way. Or at the expense of Ray, definitely no way.

We already have too many wings:
Ray
Pierce
Giddens
Walker
(Posey)
(Maggette)

PG's:
Rondo
(Pruitt maybe)

Centers:
Perk
(KG isn't a center. Keep him away from banging in the post. He's getting older)
Powe and BBD are too small.

How in the world are we gonna fill our holes if we sign Maggette with the MLE?  We will still need a defensive stopper and a shooter and all the other things Posey brings. Posey fits better into this team, and if we don't get Posey, a rival (Lakers, Pistons, Hornets, Cleveland) will.

Why is Ainge targeting so many wings? First we draft two of them and now we are after Maggette? We won't have any room on our roster to sign a back up center/PG.

Yeah, it is far-fetched. Offering MLE to Maggette is a no brainer, no more should be read into it. Maggette, we're underpaying... Posey we'll be overpaying; it's a no brainer to throw an offer out there. I don't think there's any need for speculations of Ray's family situation, etc.
