Well if he signs for one year, he'd get 400,000 more than the player option he had agreed to before. Also, we can make him think that we'll pay him more the year after with bird rights. Who knows what financial and safety risks he might be willing to take. We're selling a championship after all.
Personally I see no reason to believe that Posey won't get the MLE from some team. Did you guys watch the playoffs at all?
If you walk in with that premise and I don't believe there is any reason not to do so, you offer Posey the MLE. IMO, you increase the likelihood he leaves by playing it the other way.
I believe there is a legitimate argument over number of years and I think that is valid at his age ... but a 3 year contract timed with Pierce's deal makes sense.
Also, the Posey-Maggette deals seem intertwined to me. You only have so many minutes to give at the SF/SG position.
And while I believe Maggette is the better player and would love to see him in Boston, I admire what Posey brings to the table in terms of defense, rebounding, and offensive efficiency. Definitely feel he is worth the MLE over 3 years.
Plus, Maggette is injury prone and not that good defensively.
