is there any possibility we could get them both? because maggette would HAVE to get the full MLE if he came here - dude could probably make a bit more than that elsewhere. but there's no chance he'd come if he didn't get the full MLE. which leaves us...no options for posey, right? personally, i think this is just danny covering his bases, and that we'll resign posey and maggette will get a much more lucrative deal elsewhere.

Yes there is: we can sign Posey with the non-Bird exception (e.g. $22.5M/5 years)

If we already offered the full MLE to Posey (speculation on my part), I don't see us then going back and offering the Non-Bird's right deal afterwards and Posey not seeing it as a slap in the face.

I don't think that Ainge has offered the full MLE to Posey:

1) It wouldn't make sense. It's better for the Celtics to start by offering a non-Bird exception contract. If he gets full-MLE offers, then match the offer.

2) If Ainge offered the MLE to Corey, he wouldn't make the same offer to Posey. GMs don't act like that.

p.s. Anyway, Maggette isn't signing with the Celtics, barring a miracle.

They're not signing both Posey and Maggette. They'll go over the tax to pay one, but not both. Don't be silly. It's like the KG trade variation rumor that didn't include Al. Anyone remember that?

You could very well be right.  Easily could've started lower for Posey.  I just wonder how Posey and his agent perceived the initial offer.  They're obviously are looking in the neighborhood of the MLE and I'm not sure how they'd react to an initial offer on the Non-Bird exception contract.

I was surprised to log on and see that the Celtics made an offer to Maggette. The one thing I do like about him is he is young. What if the deal is for the mid-level for a couple of years.. with the "You be our sixth man, yet you will probably play start minutes in relief of Paul and Ray. You will be contending for championships, and you will be the future in a few years when Paul and Ray are slowing down, you become the big starter and we sign you to a bigger contract."

I like this move by Ainge. I don't know about Maggette's defense, and I do love Posey, but the lure of a championship.. who knows. If both sign, you can start making space for 18. If Posey signs, that is good. If Maggette signs, that is a nice building block for the future.. if both sign (very unlikely?) give Ainge his second consecutive Exec of the year award.

Maggette has been contacted by several NBA teams, including the Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Utah Jazz regarding his availability -- according to a source close to him who requested anonymity because negotiations are still in the early stages.

Basically, we're allowed to give Posey a 20% raise from last year's salary, with an 8% raise in subsequent years.  It's explained in more details elsewhere, but that's the essential part.

Magette is  young, but not that young. He's 29 not exactly a spring chicken. When PGA are standing on there last legs he's going to be on the downside of his prime as well.

I'm just reminding you guys because it sounds like you guys are talking about a 26 or 27 year old.

Spurs are the frontrunners according to this:

It looks like it'll be the midlevel and just depend on where he wants to go and how many years he's offered.

Well if he signs for one year, he'd get 400,000 more than the player option he had agreed to before. Also, we can make him think that we'll pay him more the year after with bird rights.  Who knows what financial and safety risks he might be willing to take. We're selling a championship after all.

Personally I see no reason to believe that Posey won't get the MLE from some team.  Did you guys watch the playoffs at all?

If you walk in with that premise and I don't believe there is any reason not to do so, you offer Posey the MLE.  IMO, you increase the likelihood he leaves by playing it the other way.

I believe there is a legitimate argument over number of years and I think that is valid at his age ... but a 3 year contract timed with Pierce's deal makes sense.

Also, the Posey-Maggette deals seem intertwined to me.  You only have so many minutes to give at the SF/SG position.

And while I believe Maggette is the better player and would love to see him in Boston, I admire what Posey brings to the table in terms of defense, rebounding, and offensive efficiency.  Definitely feel he is worth the MLE over 3 years.

Plus, Maggette is injury prone and not that good defensively.

if thats the case i dont see why he wouldnt come here we are the best team and have the best chance at a ring. Things would be much easier for him in the east too. If its the same price everyone is bidding i dont see why he wouldnt come here unless he decided to go to orlando

Always with the Spurs.  Easy for him to see his starting with Manu off the bench and Bowens slowing down.

Did I say anywhere that he won't get offers like that?

Clearly it'll be one or the other. But the option would still be available there for Posey if he wants it.

I dont see hoe Maggette signs for the MLE. He had a great year and he would take a paycut? Very surprising to me, especially for a guy like Maggette.

Who is out there that will offer more?
