I dont see hoe Maggette signs for the MLE. He had a great year and he would take a paycut? Very surprising to me, especially for a guy like Maggette.

he doesnt have much of a choice, only like 2 teams are under cap.

Spurs are the frontrunners according to this:

It looks like it'll be the midlevel and just depend on where he wants to go and how many years he's offered.

I think Orlando and San Antonio are the most logic destinations. I'd be surprised if he ends anywhere else.

Well if he signs for one year, he'd get 400,000 more than the player option he had agreed to before. Also, we can make him think that we'll pay him more the year after with bird rights.  Who knows what financial and safety risks he might be willing to take. We're selling a championship after all.

Personally I see no reason to believe that Posey won't get the MLE from some team.  Did you guys watch the playoffs at all?

Did I say anywhere that he won't get offers like that?

Why offer a contract you know he is not going to take then?  Is your goal to secure his services?

The 3 yr MLE vs. the 5 yr non bird rights is not a viable discussion.

BTW, if I'm Maggette ... I look at the Spurs.  He can play a major role over there and there are tax/cost of living benefits to living in Texas

See, now you're mixing two different types of discussions... if they get Maggette, they don't need to secure his services.

I don't think they would offer him a full out MLE offer for him right off the bat though, but you're mixing two different types of discussions and different scenarios.

Spurs are in the lead for Maggette!!

If Posey wants 4 years...get Maggette.

If Posey takes 3 or less...stay with Posey.

Either way the Spurs are in it to win it!

We're going to try to go with one Maggette thread for now, so I merged this here.

“He’s going to take a lot of the offensive load off (Manu) Ginobili, but (Spurs coach Gregg) Popovich will have to hide him defensively on the floor,” a Western Conference scout said Tuesday night.

That scout makes it sound like a done deal. :(

Couldn't the Clippers sign Davis and Brand and then use the full MLE on Maggette? If they could that would be a pretty strong team

Davis/ knight
Mobley/ Gordon
Maggette/ Thomas
Brand/ Thorton
Kaman

that team would be top 4 in the west IMO

Only assuming that Posey feels confident that he'll still get more than the LLE in 3 years. Also, he may value the fact that he can stay in the same city, playing with teammates he likes for a storied franchise who's going for a repeat.

wow - personally I want Posey back, could this be motivation for him to sign? If not, I guess in Ainge I trust!
Now, on to 18...

No, because they have to renounce to the MLE (and all their exceptions) to have enough salary space to sign Brand and Davis. Exceptions count against the cap when you're under it.

No, that can't be done.  In order to sign Davis in the first place, they have to renounce Maggette.  Once they renounce him, they can't sign him using the MLE.

Didn't know that. Why not?

I think they can't use the MLE because they have to renounce it to clear cap holds.

Wouldn't it be because they don't have the MLE to use?

That's what I'm saying. And why they don't have the MLE to use?

Because when they renounce to Livingston and Maggette Bird's rights, they'll be aprox. $29M under the cap. Then they resign Brand with a deal beginning with a $14M 1st year salary. But when you're under the cap, exceptions count against the cap (you can't have both). So, they're not really $15M under the cap (or $29 before resigning Brand), but only $7M (assuming they also have the LLE available). This means they have to renounce the exceptions in order to clear cap (the same process they followed when they renounced to Shaun and Corey Bird's rights). Only after that they'll have enough cap space to sign Davis.
