When BBD rolls back into town for next year, assuming he isn't shipped out in a trade,  which BBD are we going to see?! The BBD that worked out for the Celtics pre-draft that was (for him) slim and trim, or the current fat BBD that let himself go back to his former pudgy self over this year?

You will know everything you need to know about his work ethic by training camp. Everything you will need to know about whether he will be a few years and out of the league due to his weight issues, or whether he will realize the potential he has and hit the weight room/treadmill hard and push away that plateful of chicken wings.

It is up to you BBD. Your career may very well depend on the choices you make this summer...

I'm nodding my head yes, while I'm chomping down my 2nd piece of leftover  pizza.  What's wrong with this picture?

TP for that! (As I am eating chips and dips and drinking down a Mt. Dew...)

Right back at ya EJ.  When someone starts offering me the big bucks to stay in shape I'm there (or at least until I tear the crotch out of the last pair of my pants while squatting  ;) )

This subject is very close to home, because I have the same issue. I am not fat, but definitely not in "basketball shape" like when I was younger. I am turning 37 this summer and finding that if I don't drop a few of these extra pounds I am going to either blow my knees and ankles out, or have to stop playing ball. I have lost a step or two, a few inches of vertical, and a lot of quickness because of this. I have no one to blame for myself though. I find it hard to believe though that these guys with all the amenities that they have, and the fact that they don't have to do anything else to make a living, can't buckle down and set themselves for life. The Celtics can give them all the help they need, but they can't force them to take advantage of it.

Yup, I had to stop hoopin' several years ago because my knees couldn't handle it anymore.  Unfortunately hoops was my favorite form of exercise and I haven't found anything to replace that that keeps me interested in doing it on a regular basis (the treadmill collecting dust for instance)

The fat however slows him down, reduces his jump, and makes him less effective. That isn't even debatable!

Ok so fat makes you unable to jump as high, but do we know for sure that it makes him less effective?  I don't know if he got onto the court enough to say he was more effective in the early part of the season or less effective.

I'll put my trust in the team trainers.  He'll come into camp the way he needs to come into camp or else he'll go packing.  You're right though, listening to those trainers is what's going to keep him in the L.

Oliver Miller (nice pick below BTW) had trainers too. So did Tractor. They can't force the guy to workout and eat right in the offseason. It happens all the time in professional sports. There is no way that he should have put that much weight on this year. It speaks a lot to his desire.

As far as jumping higher making him more effective, be serious! What a ridiculous comment. OF COURSE you are more effective if you are a post player and can finish at the rim better. Now you know why Powe many times dunks the ball ferociously and BBD doesn't. He doesn't have the hops to do it. That is why he is forced to get "creative" finishing around the rim. If he was able to add a few inches of vertical due to being lighter he would be that much better. He loses NOTHING by being in better shape and losing his fat.

i don't think BBD is as out of shape as you are saying....he could lose 10-15 lbs, focus on toning and conditioning and be right where he needs to be.

i think the overweight stuff is totally overstated.

he is just a big guy and that plays to his advantage.

15 lbs overweight at the end of a season is pretty significant. He should have done a better job of staying in shape. Personally I think that he made a mistake going for a 2 year deal instead of 3 years if he wasn't going to commit more to keeping his weight down. If he's in shape for the 2008-2009 season, does anyone give him a multi-year deal for decent money and just hope that he stays in shape after he signs the contract? If he was in shape both next year and the year after he'd be in a better bargaining position when he's a free agent.

depends on the player.

10-15 lbs on a PG is a lot....on BBD not so much...

How many big guys did you see in the playoffs that seemed to be 15 lbs overweight?

how many guys BBDs size can run the floor coast to coast the way BBD did on that dunk..

he's just not in the same zip code as Traylor and Miller...

Guys like Maxiell and Turiaf are NOT overweight. Maxiell can finish above the rim with ease and explosiveness. BBD needs to get that kind of lift. Losing those extra 15-20 lbs is a big part of that.

My buddy is a huge Detroit fan and he made the comment that Maxiell lost most of his playing time as the season progressed because he had added weight and gotten out of shape. He was a dominant force earlier in the year and lost a fair amount of that due to his weight issues. That PROVES the point, not counters it...

As far as your 10-15 lb assessment, there is no way on EARTH that BBD is only 10-15 lbs overweight. I guarantee you he could lose 25 lbs of fat without any problem at all. I would like to see him lose 25 lbs of fat and add about 10 lbs of muscle. That is what he needs to do. Big AL made that commitment and look what it did for his game. He went from a guy barely fighting for minutes at times to the centerpiece in the KG trade. All because it allowed him to be a complete player.

The dunk in game 6 was the perfect example. He barely threw that ball down. At 6'9" he should be WAY above that rim. He was dunking it like a PG vs. a PF.

BBD moves with ease out there....the fact that he can do that with his size is one of the things that makes him so effective. he is never going to be a high flier but that is not his game.

if he focuses on his stamina and knocks off some weight in the process he will be fine.

that's how i see it anyway...

If he goes to Kendrick Perkins conditioning school he'll be a beast next year.

Davis had like 5 dunks all year. The Lakers defense was demoralized at that point. Let's not get carried away.

Anyone thought about the possibility that we might want BBD to be round?

Doc said several times that Baby`s lack of height would be compensated by his low center of gravity. But a low center of gravity alone doesn`t help him in the paint, otherwise you`d see more 6'5'' Centers. He needs his mass to be effective, imo. He`s pretty smart at how to use his body on defense.

Is there any statement by the coaching staff about Baby`s weight? Did they say he let himself down and didn`t take care of his weight?

I thought in a sport like Basketball, with millions on the line, a franchise like the Celtics would have the best medical staff imaginable, and that they would notice soon enough if a player becomes out of shape.

Look at photos of the kid earlier in the year vs. right now. He has put on fat this year. Plain and simple. There is no way on earth to state that this fat has made BBD better. If he had almost no body fat at all he would still be a very thick massive guy. That's how he's built. That will never be an issue for him. The fat however slows him down, reduces his jump, and makes him less effective. That isn't even debatable!

It´s not Cassell, EJ  ;) Let me debate...

I asked you how you know that we don´t want BBD to have more mass.

I said (more or less) that I trust the trainers and medical staff. Before you put weight on, there are several other things that happen with your body, and those are exactly the things the medical staff is looking for. Just to compare pictures, or just to look at him and say "See, he became fat" is not the right way to determine the state of his body. He trained a lot with Perk, from what I´ve heard, how do you know that his new, old appearance isn´t just a part of the process to get in better shape?

"The fat slows him down, reduces his jump(correct) and makes him less effective(really?)." You can´t compare him with a guy like Leon, they are different players. Just to say he´s undersized so he needs more explosiveness is too simple.

Note that I don´t know the answer, either, but if BBD would become out of shape, I´m certain the medical staff would know it before anyone else, even himself. And once the medical staff knows it, Danny and Doc know it, too, and I´m certain they would talk with Baby about it and take care of his condition.
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.
