Technically the 2nd half starts tomorrow night, so looking at the field:

Denver has won 8 straight and have looked amazing in that stretch. They seem to have figured things out and are locked in. I originally thought Memphis was the 2nd best in the West behind OKC but now I think it's clearly Denver. A Denver-OKC WCF would be amazing to witness. Jokic vs. SGA.

Houston has slipped. They feel more like a team headed towards a 1st round exit more than a team reaching the WCF, especially if their first round opponent is the Lakers. I had high hopes for them but they are fading and I think they will be more focused on an aggressive offseason trying to land a big fish to pair with Green/Thompson/Sengun (maybe Giannis or Durant?). They might have a chance to win a playoff series but only if they draw someone that's not the Lakers first round. Lakers have the experience and easily the two best players in a series.

In the East, I really do feel it's just Cleveland and Boston in Tier 1, then NY-IND-MIL in Tier 2 in that order. That's about it. I still think Cleveland is the team to beat in the East but Boston absolutely has a chance to beat them if they stay healthy. I think for most of the 2nd half the drama in the East will be seeds 7-10. CLE and BOS are basically locked into 1 and 2 unless they have a catastrophic stretch and/or NY gets white hot.

For the C's, they just need to prioritize health. They can probably just sleepwalk to the 2 seed and they also own the tiebreaker over NY currently.

Thoughts?

Basketball is an American sport, and because of that, Stephen A. Smith doesn?t think that Victor Wembanyama can be the face of the league even if he is the best player in the NBA. My personal opinion is I don?t believe an international player can be the face of the NBA, Smith said on Tuesday. I know they?re global, iconic figures, their popularity extends globally, but the NBA is an American born sport, and it needs to resonate in America, and if it doesn?t resonate in America, then it?s not going to matter to America, how you resonate beyond and so that?s just my mentality. That?s how I think about it, not to say they can?t be popular but I just think about it that way.via Clutch Points

Agree with SAS.

Most of the NBA media is driven by American media and they are warmer to US stars than European stars. They decide the face of the league.

It is tough for a European to overcome that. We saw that with Dirk. We see it today with Jokic. We see it with Giannis. Luka has come to the closest but even he gets less than you would expect.

A Euro would have to have an MJ / T-Mac type athleticism & highlight reels to overcome ... or, win so much that they cannot avoid making him the face of the league. Multiple league titles. Multiple MVPs. Probably need 3-4 titles in a short space of time (5-6 year period).

Maybe next year!

Marc Stein: Lonnie Walker IV will finish this season with Lithuania?s BC ?algiris, according to his agent George S. Langberg of GSL Sports Group. Walker, 26, plans to return to the NBA next season. He had an NBA buyout in his EuroLeague deal through Feb. 18.

Lol wrong. He just signed with the Sixers, 2/3M

It would have been nice to sign him for that. Basically they have him on a minimum deal for next season.

Here is Shams? announcement

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Luka-led Lakers might sneak their way to the WCF again if the seedings stand as it is...upsetting Rockets and OKC.

What about SGA?

Canada is basically an extension of the US ... just ask Trump!

Canada / USA same culture same language. Interchangeable in terms of picking a face of the league. It won't matter if it is a Canadian.

That said, SGA isn't the face of the league either. He doesn't have the personality. He has the game but not the charisma. Similar issue with Tatum.

That is why (1) they keep looking to Morant and Ant even though they haven't taken their games to that top level. And (2) They keep relying on the old heads of LeBron, Steph and Durant as the faces of the league.

They don't have a new face of the league.

I think the All-Star Game came too close to the trade deadline. There was so much excitement after the busy trade deadline. Lots of player movement. Star players moving. That excitement feels like it has peetered out with the teams not playing for the last week.

Lost some of that momentum / excitement.

My opinion is that SAS is right, but nothing that he's saying dictates that the player needs to be born and raised in America. You 'just' need a charismatic dude who's fluent in English, has a great game, and (distant third) ideally wins a lot.

Alternate timeline: I think Kobe is still Kobe if he doesn't move back to the USA until he's drafted, for example - and sure, he's 'born in America' but he's also a guy who left the US when he was six years old. He's a functional Italian at that point.

It seems like Anthony Edwards is being forced on us as the future face of the league.  He just doesn't do it for me like Europeans Jokic and Wembenyama do.  I agree that SGA doesn't have the personality for it.

So what did the Lakers find in Mark Williams' physical? Because he's out there playing for Charlotte right now lol

Also I'm glad to see Lebron's ankle magically healed. Couldn't just wear the uniform and take pics + play a few "low-stress" minutes in the ASG while taking away someone's spot  ::) (yeah during the photoshoot he couldn't even be bothered to wear the all-star uniform and just wore street-clothes to appear "unique", what a diva)

Not watching the game right now but geez a low-scoring game and it's nearing the end of third. Lakers playing defense suddenly?
