Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks have agreed to a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension. Brunson will have a player option in Year 4. Brunson could have signed in 2025 for $269.1 million over five years, which is a difference of $113 million guaranteed and an annual average of $39.1 million against $53.8 million.

It's a calculated gamble. He's turning down a ton of money but at the same time, if he can keep it up in a few years he can definitely manage to sign a bigger deal when the revenue and cap all continue to rise. And plus, it gives him some security now as opposed to potentially waiting and suffering a major injury this upcoming season.

The Houston Rockets look set for a good step forward next season. I might have them as high as 5th in the West.

G: VanVleet, A Holiday
G: Jalen Green, R Sheppard
F: D Brooks, Amen Thompson, Cam Whitmore
F: Jabari Smith, Jeff Green
C: Sengun, Steven Adams

Steven Adams will be a good upgrade to their bench. Reed Sheppard looks like he should be a steady contributor. So those two guys should help stabilize their bench alongside Jeff Green.

Then you have all their young guys who are still improving. Sengun and Jabari Smith took big steps forward last season. May do so again next season. Jalen Green had an up and down year mostly down. I expect him to be better. Then the two young SFs in Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore. Lots of room for internal improvement.

That?s the same starting lineup they had last season. I think they could make the play-in tournament, but the 5 spot in the West seems unlikely. Even with the improved bench.

I don't have an issue with it. He plays under Thibs, no guarantee he makes it to the end of the season without a major injury.

Spurs starting lineup

Wemby will be a top 5 center next season. Is Devin Vassell a top 10 SG? Probably. Harrison Barnes is an average starting SF. CP3 a low end starting PG. Sochan a wild card but I'll leave him as near bottom of the pack starting PF.

So one high end starter, one strong starter, one average starter and two weak starters.

Spurs bench

Two high end bench players in Keldon Johnson and Zach Collins. A middle of the pack backup PG in Tre Jones. Stephon Castle is a bit of a wild card. He looks like he may a solid bench player but let's leave him below average until he proves otherwise.

That is a pretty good bench. Two high end bench players and an average bench player. Strong 8 man rotation there. They have some other guys behind them like S Castle & Champagnie.

Overall

It is a pretty respectable team. No reason for them not to be challenging for a .500 record.
I'd be amazed if they were anywhere close to .500

Knicks fans are already onto the narrative that Brunson ?took a $113m discount?. This is not true. In fact, he could end up making MORE money over his career while protecting himself from the impact of a major injury.

Charlotte signed Taj Gibson to a 1yr deal.

One of these veteran / assistant coach type roles. Seriously, if teams don't need these roster spots reduce the size of teams. Stop pretending these guys are players.

Agreed, but I would say that if you want to hire them to the coaching staff, just do that.

Not gonna lie.  Didn't realize he was still floating around the league at this point.  Were they able to get a veteran's minimum for the fork sticking out of his back also?

i think both teams and players could benefit if there was a designated roster spot for these types of player/coaches. maybe the player needs to be 37+ years old, two years or more removed from any performance based awards (no all stars, defensive team selections, league leaders etc.), and averaged less than 10 mpg the prior season could be eligible for a minimum level salary contract and can be added to a full roster (not take up an existing roster spot). maybe not even count it against the cap/tax and just treat it as a bloated assistant coach salary. something like that, not necessarily exact.

Part of the concept of creating a third 2-way spot in the new CBA, as well as increasing the eligibility for it, was to keep more room for players on veteran minimum deals.  I don?t think they need to create anything special, because they already in essence did.

Gibson started 3 playoff games for the Knicks last year and averaged 7 rebounds in his 5 playoff games.  He seems like he can still play.  Short bursts here and there.

sure, but that's not nearly as fun.
