We can debate about Russell Wilson but I will agree with Moranis, Payton is a clown. Have people watched his press conferences all season? He's never liked Wilson nor has it sounded like he tried to work with him. Just today, here's an exchange with a reporter:

Quote
“I can’t replace the entire offensive line. I can’t bring in five new receivers. And if it continues over a period of time, then there will be a new guy talking to you as well.”

Also, after the loss to the Pats, he literally talked to his team and said he's disappointed, and "disappointed for them". I saw the game and believe me, coaching was just as bad in that game. Belichick outcoached him despite fielding a 3-11 team.

Payton never takes responsibility for anything and never blames himself. He's basically scapegoating Wilson for everything that's gone wrong. Defense gave up 70 points to Miami? It's because of Russell Wilson.

Yes, I'm sure the owners are also contributing to trying not to pay Wilson a lot of money, but it's also clear Payton is doing everything he can to pin all the blame on Wilson and not himself for anything. Both can absolutely be true.
Pretty much. Payton, however, did not sign Wilson to that ridiculous extension.  If they cut Wilson this off season, they owe him his 39 million and then have 85 million in dead cap money (if they designate him post July 1, it is 35.4 million in 2024 and 49.6 million in 2025).  And if they do that, they will cut him with him not having played a single game under his extension.  They are basically going to pay Russell Wilson 124 million dollars to go away after using multiple 1st round picks to acquire him.  That wasn't Payton, but Payton knew full well what he was signing up for when he took the job.  And for that he is a huge clown and should be fired.

Raiders did something similar with Carr last season

Either way, Broncos are screwed. Payton isn't saving them and they now will need to find a QB.
The Raiders sent Carr home and off the active roster, the Broncos are making Wilson dress and serve as the back-up and the Raiders didn't bring it up months before doing it.

Turned out bad.  At the time it was bold and appeared like it might   work.  If not getting a top pick in a draft with blue chip QBs, you need to take some risk (unless you get lucky). Or… mediocrity forever.  That’s why the win in Denver sucked.

the trade was a fine gamble, it ws the ridiculous extension that was horrid at the time and looks much worse now.

Eh, I'm not so sure about that trade. I think Denver made a big mistake. I'm not a big Seahawks fan, but Wilson was horrible in his last season with them. I didn't think there was a big dropoff between his first season in DEN and his last in SEA. Sure, he looked better at the beginning of the year, but at the end of the day, he's a gunslinger with diminished athleticism, accuracy, and by all accounts, leadership.

He might have the worst contract in the sport at the most important position. Trading for Russ would help Denver, even if they had to attach a first rounder.

he has the worst contract because of the extension though.  He hasn't even played a snap under the extension yet.  The trade was a lot, but I understand the gamble. The extension was just so bad that even if Russ was playing well, the contract with the extension would probably still be the worst in the sport.

I think I know what you're saying. They should have let their new QB come in and play for the next deal before an extension. I think such an extension was discussed and all but guaranteed prior to the trade, but you are right. That extension is a kick in the pants.

I don't see another team coming in to save the day for Denver. I would imagine they would have to eat serious $ to move him.

What poetic justice. Watson will always be vastly overpaid, but he will now be known as the overrated creep, and not just a run of the mill creep. Poor Cleveland fans.

“Speaking Friday, Wilson said the team's decision-makers told him on "the Monday or Tuesday" after the Broncos' Oct. 29 win over the Chiefs that they would bench him if he didn't adjust that $37 million guarantee.”

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Can this also be a class action lawsuit? They're bullying their employee.

Denver Broncos is a cancerous organization. Sean Payton is also a cancerous personnel. Classless and lack of professionalism.

No, his contract is under a collective bargaining agreement.  There’s a process if he has a grievance.  Notably, also, he was not benched in October.

Also the players union already met with them about this. This stuff doesn’t get leaked all the time but I find it a little funny if people think nfl ownership is generally kind and pro player and doesn’t do this stuff regularly.
