: The #Broncos threatened to bench Russell Wilson weeks ago if he didn’t remove his injury guarantees.

Russell Wilson’s benching by the Broncos today is solely financially related and has been in the works for weeks, per multiple sources with direct access to the situation.

The Broncos approached Wilson two days after their October 29 upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs and told him he would be made inactive for the rest of the season if he did not adjust his contract and defer the injury guarantee trigger date that he has for 2025. Wilson has $37 million in injury guarantees for 2025 that will become guaranteed no matter what on the fifth day of the 2024 league year in March.

At that time, Wilson was coming off a 3-touchdown game in the win over the Chiefs and was starting to experience the type of success he envisioned following a challenging first year in Denver. The threat however, “shocked him,” and the two sides got into a major dispute on how to proceed.

The issue remained, but the Broncos stuck with Wilson as the team strung together primetime wins over the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings, followed by another win over the Cleveland Browns, one of the league’s best defenses.

Wilson, 35, has started all 15 games this season and has completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 3,070 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

When the threat was made by the Broncos, the team, Wilson's camp, the NFLPA, and another unknown party were involved in negotiations that ended with no change in Wilson’s contract

And it all came crashing down today when Sean Payton and other top-level members of Denver’s organization decided to go ahead with the plan they’ve had for weeks.

If this was true, shouldn't this mean you should be angry with the front office as a whole and not specifically Peyton? It would seem the front office would care a lot more about the money then the coach would.

Peyton is an owner impacted by the teams payroll? This is obviously based on money and it seems very dubious to think the guy very minimally impacted by this financially would be the lead behind it. Just not really following the logic on it.

Payton wants to dump Wilson because Payton doesn't like Wilson. The only way to dump Wilson is to not be on the hook for a bunch of extra money.  This is entirely driven by Payton.  He is the guy that approached Wilson after the biggest win of the season. He is the guy that was pouting all November during the win streak. He is the guy that controls everything in Denver. They brought him in to do that. He is the guy pulling all of the strings.

If you don’t think the owners are reluctant to commit to Wilson’s salary after two years of mediocre quarterback play when he is 35 and this is all a personal vendetta against a good qb I got a bridge I would like to sell ya. Also, poorly kept secret here in Denver basically the whole team dislikes Wilson… Peyton probably is a jerk, bounty gate was not a great look. But this instance the ire is really misguided

We can debate about Russell Wilson but I will agree with Moranis, Payton is a clown. Have people watched his press conferences all season? He's never liked Wilson nor has it sounded like he tried to work with him. Just today, here's an exchange with a reporter:

Quote
“I can’t replace the entire offensive line. I can’t bring in five new receivers. And if it continues over a period of time, then there will be a new guy talking to you as well.”

Also, after the loss to the Pats, he literally talked to his team and said he's disappointed, and "disappointed for them". I saw the game and believe me, coaching was just as bad in that game. Belichick outcoached him despite fielding a 3-11 team.

Payton never takes responsibility for anything and never blames himself. He's basically scapegoating Wilson for everything that's gone wrong. Defense gave up 70 points to Miami? It's because of Russell Wilson.

Yes, I'm sure the owners are also contributing to trying not to pay Wilson a lot of money, but it's also clear Payton is doing everything he can to pin all the blame on Wilson and not himself for anything. Both can absolutely be true.

Pretty much. Payton, however, did not sign Wilson to that ridiculous extension.  If they cut Wilson this off season, they owe him his 39 million and then have 85 million in dead cap money (if they designate him post July 1, it is 35.4 million in 2024 and 49.6 million in 2025).  And if they do that, they will cut him with him not having played a single game under his extension.  They are basically going to pay Russell Wilson 124 million dollars to go away after using multiple 1st round picks to acquire him.  That wasn't Payton, but Payton knew full well what he was signing up for when he took the job.  And for that he is a huge clown and should be fired.

Raiders did something similar with Carr last season

Either way, Broncos are screwed. Payton isn't saving them and they now will need to find a QB.

I said Peyton is probably a clown. He literally got caught lying about a plan of players being paid to injure other players. I don’t think he is a good person by any stretch. It’s just obviously true that the owners are 100% on board with this and driving it every much as Peyton that they don’t want to pay a washed up qb 40 million dollars to be lousy the next two years. If Wilson was playing good and Peyton just personally disliked him the owners would not eat 80 million dollars over Peyton’s “feelings.” I thought if we knew anything from pro sports it is that talent wins out. Mikal bridges isn’t playing in the nba because of his personality and Wilson won’t be a backup or low salary starter next year cause people don’t like him either. He sucks.

Yeah all true. It's an ugly situation all-around.

Wilson definitely didn't live up to expectations but he wasn't terrible. I wonder if Payton is now gonna convince Denver to fully rebuild, which can also buy him some additional time. But the trade to get Payton is also looking pretty bad now too

As someone that watched too much Denver football living in Denver he really was pretty bad. He played a little bit better this offseason but he absolutely kills drives now because he doesn’t realize he can’t extend plays with his legs the way he used to be able. So while his td to interception ratio is good, he has also taken a ton of sacks and has 10 fumbles this year. I’ll certainly come on here and eat some crow if he has a good season as a starter next year but I would be shocked.

Last year Nathaniel Hackett was the scapegoat. This year, Russell Wilson is a problem. But the problem also lies in coaching, and Sean Payton is no exception.

Don't get the lovefest or hype over Sean Payton...he doesn't seem like a good coach. His stint with New Orleans? Only one Superbowl and he was involved in Bountygate for that...taking out Brett Farve in that postseason against the Vikings. After that, not another ring just like Aaron Rodgers. I guess that's karma when the Rams beat them in that controversial game. Or the Vikings with the Minneapolis Miracle.

Russell Wilson just tweeted btw

Yeah he’s done in Denver

He didn’t live up to expectations but I mean the Broncos are the ones who gave him that extension with those clauses and also they have way more issues besides QB.

Wilson will flourish in an offense like Atlanta's. Think he'll find success there. I also heard the Seahawks need a QB.

As for Sean Payton, garbage person in general. Zero respect for this guy. I like how the New England Patriots were the ones who broke the Denver Broncos apart at the end. At the cost of a top 3 pick though.

Did people miss the part where Wilson's teammates in Denver didn't like him? It also has come out that he rubbed a lot of his seahawks teammates the wrong way. Why in the world to people have so much sympathy for this guy? He is a rapidly declining quarterback who was great at extending play,s but now he just gets sacked. Not that the options are in house for the falcons but would be insane to me if they brought in a qb 12 years older than all their stud position players (pitts, robinson, london) that everyone finds annoying. I mean who can rule out Arthur Smith but that would be hilarious and worse than the Colts Matt Ryan experiment.

And yea Peyton has been a jerk since Bounty gate at least, but no need to act like Russell has not fell off a cliffl
