The San Antonio Spurs renounced the free agent rights to Romeo Langford.

Shocking.
Ya. Years ago somone called me out when I said Romeo was officially a bust after a 1-11 shooting game for Maine. He said he’d hold me to it and that post wouldn’t age well. 🤔

I don't think that was me, but I admittedly was a Romeo supporter.  I did say Romeo would beat out Nesmith in the 2021 preseason.  Ultimately neither lasted to the 2022 preseason.
He was always so passive offensively. I’m a firm believer that you can spot losers in summer league. If you are not impressing in summer league or G League, you are more than likely a bust. Success in summer league or G League doesn’t guarantee NBA success, but failure “guarantees” NBA failure IMO. Although Max Strus is one exception.

That may be, but he didn’t even participate in summer league until prior to his third season.  He was hurt his rookie year and there was no summer league his second year because of Covid.  He was the summer Celtics leading scorer, rebounder, and assist man the one year he did participate, so your memory of his summer league troubles feels questionable.

Toronto has such a weird team

G: D Schroder, G Trent Jr
F: S Barnes, G Dick
F: Anunoby, Jalen McDaniels,
F: P Siakam, O Porter, Thad Young, C Boucher
C: J Poeltl, P Achiuwa

One legit PG

Definitely a strange roster.  What do you think of offering Pritchard for Achiuwa, straight up.  They make almost exactly the same.  Achiuwa becomes our 4th big to replace Grant.  I see him as more of a PF anyway.  We would have to back fill Pritchard with Davison and Banton or go find a vet.

Adrian Wojnarowski: Free agent F Montrezl Harrell has agreed on a one-year deal to return to the Philadelphia 76ers, sources tell ESPN.

I don't like that. They are better off playing Mo Bamba than M Harrell. Bamba gives them solid defense. Harrell just knows how to feed himself. Not play team ball.

Sixers fans are livid they brought him back, but many think this was a wink wink deal for Harrell opting out because it saves them a little under luxury cap but Harrell makes same amount of money.

I saw the same explanation:

Quote
Yossi Gozlan: Montrezl Harrell’s player option amount he declined was $2.76M. His veteran minimum this year is $2.89M thanks to the cap rising. The Sixers would’ve had a $2.76M cap hit in their books had he opted in. Instead his new salary this year will only count as $2.02M. Everybody wins. 10 hours ago – via

I think it would work similarly for us if we cut and resigned Kornet.

I would do that trade.

I don't think Precious is a PF though. I don't think his skill-level is good enough to play PF in anything other than spot minutes. His shooting is too poor, his passing is poor, his handles are poor. His skill-level is that of a center. So even though his size is more typical of a PF I believe he has to play most of his time at C due to his low skill level.

I love his energy and hustle though. Good worker. I'd love to have him here as our 3rd string center. Good upgrade over Kornet. And we have JD Davison ready to replace Pritchard as 3rd string PG so I am happy with trading our 3rd string PG for a better 3rd string C.

And Precious can play some PF next to our skilled centers in Horford or Porzingis. I would probably play smaller with Tatum or Brissett at PF over Precious but it is useful option to have against bigger body PFs. I'd view Precious as 3rd string PF and 3rd string C. Double duty service.

Would the Vet Min for Kornet become guaranteed?  Right now he is NG which offers additional flexibility.  I am not sure if Harrell's PO would have been guaranteed.

I think most of us would generally agree with that, but it's still difficult to evaluate at times.  We all know how disorganized summer league is.  Hauser looked terrible in summer league last year, and many here grumbled about Brad signing him to a contract (myself included).  Hauser has proven that he is a knockdown shooter and can contribute to many teams in this league.  Some of these players will play better with better talent around them.  It's just hard to find the diamond in the rough.

I'll defer to C21 here, but yes, I think we could sign him to the same non-guaranteed deal.  It would just become a one year, subsidized deal (which saves the team some money) versus the second year of a two year deal.

Currently he makes $2,413,304; spotrac has the minimum for guys with six years experience estimated as $2,528,233.  So, Luke gets an extra $115k or so; we save around $300k on the cap books, because the league subsidizes the contract.

I don't know and can't find confirmation but I have a hunch that the contract would be guaranteed in order to get the subsidy.  Again, I don't know, maybe someone will chime in.  I did check the contract for Blake Griffin last season and I believe it was fully guaranteed right from the start:

Quote
Blake Griffin signed a 1 year / $2,905,851 contract with the Boston Celtics, including $2,905,851 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $2,905,851. In 2023-24, Griffin will earn, while carrying a cap hit of $2,019,706.

This one case does not mean that other terms are not possible.  At this point, it is better to have the flexibility of the NG contract and that may be why this has not already been done.

Yes, they absolutely could cut and resign him to another non-guaranteed deal to save money relative to the apron and tax while giving Kornet more.  The only reason not to do that is if they want to trade him this season because he has veto rights, but if that's the case, they should just cut him and sign someone else to a non-guaranteed contract instead.

My guess is that will happen either a) when they need to sign someone and have to clear $400k, or b) at the end of training camp, when they'll give him a partial guarantee (because if he's made the roster, a partial guarantee effectively doesn't cost anything).

Dario Saric and Christian Wood reportedly have only had vet min offers so far. The Celtics should grab one of these two guys for part of the MLE and fill that need for a backup power forward.

I wholeheartedly agree. Get one of them and we’ll be good to go for now.

I would take Christian Wood at the TMLE. I think he is a good signing for someone else at the MLE. His basketball reputation has taken too much of a hit whatever about his locker room reputation. He is a better player than he is being given credit for.

He is a capable defensive player when he plays PF. It was making him a full-time center and even a full time center in a defensively challenged lineup that made him look so bad on defense. He isn't that. He ain't a great defender but he is capable. His size, speed and athleticism bail him out of a lot situations and as a 2nd shot-blocker at PF he is a net positive on D for his teams.

Good offensive player. Good rebounder. Capable defender.

Someone is going to get a steal with this guy.

Bloody Jason Kidd misusing him and Wood gets all the blame for Kidd's errors. Unfair.

It amazes me that Kidd still gets head coaching jobs in the NBA. He's been a bad coach everywhere he went.
