Doc helped talk Beverley into signing there

Quote
One of the 76ers’ newest players, guard Patrick Beverley, might never have agreed to play in Philly if not for the endorsement of the coach the team sent packing earlier this offseason — Doc Rivers.

Quote
“You know me, before I make any life decision I hit Doc [Rivers],” Beverley said. “Doc is a mentor; Doc is [dang] near a father figure. Doc is everything. I need something, I need answers, I need help, I hit Doc.

“Hit Doc [and said], ‘I might go to Philly’ — obviously, he was there. ‘How you like the situation?’ Now, man, this is a Hall of Fame coach who just got fired. His response, exact words, ‘I love Philadelphia for you. They need you. You will be great with Joel [Embiid]. James [Harden], he respects you; you will be great with him. If I had you last season, we would have been a different team.’ Shout-out to Doc Rivers, too, baby. That’s my man. So shout-out, Doc. Exact words.”

Apparently, that’s all the convincing it took to get Beverley to agree to a deal with the Sixers

Quote
“Once Doc gave me the green [light], I called my agent back and said, ‘Man, give me until the end of the day, I’m going to talk to some more teams, you feel me? I’m going to talk to Boston again; I’m going to talk to Washington again,’” Beverley continued. “But when Doc gave me the green, I’m like [bleep] it. I trust Doc. He’s there, he don’t have anything, no grudges. He could’ve been a bitter coach and said not to go there — no, ‘Philly will be great for you.’ Done. Doc said it, let’s go be done.”

PICKS TRADE: The Memphis Grizzlies are trading three second-round picks to the Phoenix Suns for two first-round pick swaps (2024 and 2030) and Isaiah Todd, sources tell ESPN. The seconds are 2025 via Pels, and Memphis’ 2028 and 2029 picks.

That seems like a solid gamble by the Grizzlies.

Interesting use of second-rounders.

That sounds like a terrible trade for Phoenix. Why would you give up a first round pick swap so far out over a couple of 2nd rounders?

Because second rounders are valuable in the new CBA for teams above the second apron.  More valuable than very late 1sts.

Not really. Look second rounders are great, but all else being equal you still want to pick higher in the draft.

Why do this deal? Its a bet. PHO is betting they will be good enough in 24' and 30' that those swaps won't matter. MEM is betting the swaps will matter and that moving up in the first round is worth a lot more than a few seconds.

More importantly it gives MEM an actual THING they can trade. Those swaps aren't worth much to bad or mediocre teams because those teams know they are unlikely to ever cash in the swap. The second round picks on the other hand don't have that limitation. Its worth the same to a bad, mediocre or good team regardless. Swaps have other limitations nas well, the other team needs to actually own a pick yuou can swap with which further limits their market.

In other words why 2nds over a swap? Its more flexible.

I’m not arguing it from Memphis’ point of view, I’m talking fully of the Suns.

The Clippers are paying $600k more for pick 30 than the Nuggets are for pick 32.  There is a very good chance the Clippers would have had the same player at either spot, and an even greater chance that the quality of player will be indistinguishable. It doesn’t seem like much, but if they try to dip down below it in a year or two, the several hundred thousand extra they’re paying pick 30 will matter, and the tax bill is real today.  The Suns are, and will be for the next few years, in a very similar spot.

I guess for all of us blasting the Celtics with free agents we have to admit this as least one instance we were officially making an effort to sign a vet and he chose somewhere else

I think part of that was due to the Celtics asking him to wait vs Philly being ready with an offer outright. The fact that he called Boston (and Washington) before coming tp Pilly just showed that Beverly’s interest with both teams were real.

On a side note, do you guys really think that PatBev would have been a good fit here? I still remember his antics during that Boston - LA game where he took out a camera.

Signing Beverly would be way down on my priority list.

I'm not losing sleep over not getting Beverley, BUT I would have liked him for sure. Not much you can do though when he just picks someone else, and it's not worth overpaying for him.

And Pat confirmed we offered him more money than Philly, too. For all the hand wringing about Brad not trying to sign FA's, there was a rumor on Twitter that we were in touch JRich too, but he ultimately liked the fact that he could go back to Miami in a starting role.

Let's face it, our top 7 are pretty much set in some order: White/Brown/JT/KP/Rob/Al/Brogdon... We're not offering guys a ton of money and a 7th/8th man role at best. It's just not as attractive as some of y'all think it is.

100%  You can't force someone to pick the C's just to park their buts on the bench and only play heavy minutes in case of injuries or when  someone rests.

On the other hand you look at the fragility of a lot of our players and they should know there will be a lot of minutes to grab because chances are someone will be hurt and injuries babied until the playoffs.

Lastly, F Doc for pushing him towards Philly.
