Minor update to the roster status with the signing of Jay Scrubb:

Roster (14)
White             Pritchard           Banton
Brown            Brogdon            Champagnie (NG)
Tatum            Hauser              Brissett
Porzingis        OPEN                Walsh
RWilliams       Horford             Kornet (NG)

2-way (2)
Davison (PG)
Scrubb (SG/Wing)
OPEN

Exhibit 9 (0) :
OPEN
OPEN
OPEN

I have added open spots for Exhibit 9 (training camp deals) contracts.  I think the rules are that we can have up to 20 total, which includes regular contracts and 2-way.  Right now, we are at 14 Roster, 2 two-way, and 0 Ex-9.

I see Champagnie as on the bubble, all the more with Scrubb signing his two-way, but no need to do anything with him right away.  Only $50,000 guaranteed on 1 Aug and then $350,000 on opening night.  His contract offers a lot of flexibility.

Walsh isn’t a PF. He’s barely over 200lbs. Needs to put on 20-30lbs to play that position.

Swap Brissett and Walsh.  Walsh in year 2 or 3 may be strong enough for a small ball 4 but he absolutely needs to get in the weight room.

I don’t think it matters. I just had to stick them somewhere in a box on the roster. Both players seem kind of like swing forwards to me. You can put them wherever you want.

That last two-way spot is interesting to me. I'd like to bring both Harry Giles and Vincent Valerio-Bodon to camp to see if there's anything there.

It seemed like the Giles on a 2-way thing was a sure thing due to Tatum's friendship and the adding of a 3rd spot, so I wonder what the hold up is. Either the Cs never actually wanted to do it or Giles actually has other options he's considering?

The Celtics were not one of the teams who reportedly attended Giles’ workout. So maybe there’s no real interest there?

There were reportedly a dozen teams there, and that article only names five.

I agree Giles makes a ton of sense for the 3rd two-way. It's crazy that he's eligible because it feels like he's been around for a decade.

The BBV guy looks like an interesting candidate for that spot too.

Champagnie I guess is a good place holder for the 14th spot unless they find someone better. John Wall? Terrance Davis?  They probably have a hard time convincing someone like that to sign because there isn't many minutes available.

I would feel better if they got a 4 or 5 for the 15th spot since Horford is likely to sit out back to backs and Rob is injury prone. Blake might be a good insurance guy. I still won't give up on Trendon Watford.  JaMychal Green?  Stanley Johnson?  So little options left. Frank Kaminski washed?

JaMychal Green would be a nice fit with this team.

It would make sense for the cs to sign.a big to a 2 way deal.  They need a Kornet replacement for next year.  They need a 3 for that last roster spot and champagnie can be released b4 opening night.  Only 50k is guaranteed on 8/1 and 350k on opening night.

I would go with Blake. C's are going to miss Grant's bulk more than his 3-pt shooting, IMO.

Giles makes sense for the Celtics and the Celtics make sense for Giles.  The path is there. We have the 2-way slot.  If he does well, there is a full roster spot available as a back up PF (Grant replacement).  If that works out, there is a longer term role for him as the Horford replacement, a meaningful role on a team expected to contend for a while.

In that it has not happened yet, one side or the other (or both) must be looking at other options.  Doesn't mean it won't happen, just that someone is not ready to commit yet.  Giles may be looking for a deal more like what Banton got (2 years, $4,216,676 total, all guaranteed). The Celtics may have durability concerns and don't want to commit to a player that is just going to break down.

Well we didn't sign Gallinari until July 12th last year, so we're still in that window of time where Brad could do something.

This is exactly what is going to happen. Or they just keep a roster spot open with Brad telling us they will look to add during the regular season or at the deadline (which they won't do).

I expect the roster is pretty much set with these. Maybe they add one more 2 way guy. Still concerning not to have much scoring off the bench and no real back up 4.

Brissett seems to be a hustle guy but I am not sure he can score like they need. Banton is a cheerleader.

Last Season Second Unit:

This Season Second Unit (so far):
Brogdon - Pritchard - Hauser - Brissett - Horford

*For most of the season, Kornet (804 min, 69 games, 0 starts) was the back up C.  RWill (823 min) only played 35 games, started 20.

I get the sense that people are forgetting that we now can have Horford coming off the bench.  That is an upgrade if you think of Horford as the replacement for Grant.  The 5th bench slot was shared between RWill, Kornet, Griffin, and even Muscala, so no established role there.  It was less important because we were mostly playing 1-big.  So last season it was Grant and whoever, this season it is Horford and Brissett.

I don't disagree that one more bench piece would help, but I don't agree that we are worse than last season in any way.

Why do we need more than 9 guys? I still don't get this point. Some are concerned about not signing Grant Williams, but he wasn't good enough to play major minutes in the last Miami games.

Do people want Brad to sign someone like Grant to a deal over $10m per year, when that guy probably won't play major minutes?
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

I think that is good if everyone is healthy. We don't know if Brogdan is going to miss time right out of the gate. Rob always has an injury. Al won't play back to backs and KP is a guy who has injury history.

That doesn't leave a ton of options to pick up the slack. We don't know if PP can be a regular steady offensive contributor. Same with Hauser. Is Joe going to trust them?

Brissett...can he get you 10-12 points a game off the bench?

Just a lot of unknowns.
