I just have a gut feeling we are going to cheap out with G league level guys, but I hope I am wrong

This is exactly what is going to happen. Or they just keep a roster spot open with Brad telling us they will look to add during the regular season or at the deadline (which they won't do).

I expect the roster is pretty much set with these. Maybe they add one more 2 way guy. Still concerning not to have much scoring off the bench and no real back up 4.

Brissett seems to be a hustle guy but I am not sure he can score like they need. Banton is a cheerleader.

White
Brogdan
PP
Brown
JT
AL
Rob
KP
Walsh
Brissett
Banton
Kornet
Hauser

Last Season Second Unit:
Brogdon - Pritchard - Hauser - Grant - RWill*

This Season Second Unit (so far):
Brogdon - Pritchard - Hauser - Brissett - Horford

*For most of the season, Kornet (804 min, 69 games, 0 starts) was the back up C.  RWill (823 min) only played 35 games, started 20.

I get the sense that people are forgetting that we now can have Horford coming off the bench.  That is an upgrade if you think of Horford as the replacement for Grant.  The 5th bench slot was shared between RWill, Kornet, Griffin, and even Muscala, so no established role there.  It was less important because we were mostly playing 1-big.  So last season it was Grant and whoever, this season it is Horford and Brissett.

I don't disagree that one more bench piece would help, but I don't agree that we are worse than last season in any way.

I think that is good if everyone is healthy. We don't know if Brogdan is going to miss time right out of the gate. Rob always has an injury. Al won't play back to backs and KP is a guy who has injury history.

That doesn't leave a ton of options to pick up the slack. We don't know if PP can be a regular steady offensive contributor. Same with Hauser. Is Joe going to trust them?

Brissett...can he get you 10-12 points a game off the bench?

Just a lot of unknowns.

Well, yeah, if Brogdon and Horford both get hurt, then our bench won't be as good.  But until someone does get hurt leading to missing a chunk of the season, the team looks good to me.  And that is why you keep some roster flexibility as you go into the season.  You don't know how it is going to go.  But when whatever is going to happen, actually happens, you address it at that time.  But you can't expect to have redundancy on top of redundancy at every position at the start of the season.

I am all for bringing in another bench player.  I don't see Champagnie contributing so that is a slot that could be filled with a more useful player.  I am fine with Kornet.  I think he is useful enough as an end of the bench big.  I am also fine to go into the season with 14 roster spots + 2-ways and the TPE in hand, if a solid deal does not present itself.  That gives us some flexibility to address needs along the way, when they become needs.

The Dalano Banton signing is official: 2yrs, $4.2M, second year team option.

I'm glad that the second year isn't guaranteed.

Interesting it wasn’t officially signed until after summer league.

Yeah, I thought that was weird, for both sides:

1.  It's risky for the player.  If he gets injured, presumably the contract goes away; and

2.  If Brad wanted to see something at SL from Banton before completing the signing, I'm not sure what results he liked

I agree, that sounds more appropriate than fully guaranteed (which was what Spotrac had been listing).  I consider him a prospect, I don't expect him to contribute beyond garbage time or widespread team illness or some other "emergency" situation.  I am OK with having a couple of prospects at the end of the roster.  I put Walsh in the same category.  Champagnie is as well, so that is 3 if Champagnie makes it to the start of the season.  I would prefer we replace Champagnie with a vet min who at least has a chance of being useful.  2 prospects on the regular roster along with 3 two-way prospects is enough, the right mix in my opinion.

I don't know if the Celtics are seeing something more in Champagnie than I am but his non-guaranteed contract makes him very expendable.  Jay Scrubb may be better than him.  It is nice that he kept the roster spot warm, but hopefully we can attract a nice vet min in the next few weeks.

I guess it gave Banton a chance to showcase for a better offer from another team, maybe get a second guaranteed season.  Maybe a better playing time situation.  This was not very likely though and my advice to him would have been to sign the Celtics deal and skip summer league.

I forget how this works.  Is there a specified era that this team is playing by?  Like, 2023 rules, 1995 rules, etc.?

Also, we keep saying top-75, but it includes all 76 players the league listed?

I don’t know, I interpret that more as he’s not being salary-dumped. Being “valued” just implies to me a team was trying to get him for next to nothing.

This does not seem like a surprise.  Brogdon was close to being traded earlier but that was part of a plan to trade one of White, Smart, or Brogdon, to get a big.  They had surplus redundancy at combo guard and not enough at PF/C.  Smart ended up being the one traded.  There is now no reason to trade Brogdon and in fact, if he was traded, it would create a soft spot in the roster.  A position (combo guard) of excess before the Smart/Porzingis trade would become a position of weakness.

I too am glad they are not trading Brogdon, in a general sense, or just to trade him.  Now if they can trade him for Lillard or Embiid, that is a different story.

I read this too but can't imagine if someone floats a name that Brad doesn't pull the trigger.  Who knows though, he was aggressive in getting him.

I don't like much the Clippers have to offer  in terms of replacing Brogdon as we will need ball handling

I think this quote sums it up:

Quote
“They didn’t want to move him in the first place,” said one source involved in the pre-draft maneuverings. “They really like Malcolm. But they had to balance out their roster. They didn’t want to go into another season having to rely so heavily on (Robert) Williams and (Al) Horford. They had a bit of a logjam in the backcourt, and they really needed some insurance up front.”

I don't think there is any more to it than that.
