Teams have made calls for Grant Williams?
At the top of the conference, the Celtics are looking for upgrades at center and wing. It’s been widely reported they have had interest in Poeltl. NBA executives say teams have made calls to Boston about Grant Williams, who has underwhelmed on defense ahead of entering restricted free agency this summer. – via Kevin O'Connor @ The Ringer
I'd find that a bit surprising and a bit more surprising if the C's actually traded him.
admittedly, he's not having as good as year as hoped for, certainly offensively, but I'd be curious what other teams are offering us that would tempt us to impact team chemistry
Why would you be surprised? They still have to sign him and couldn't last off season because he wanted more than they were willing to pay him. Considering how poorly he's played and how some of his minutes have gone to Kornet, it wouldn't shock me that Brad would be looking forward beyond the 2nd half of this season - as long as they're not weakened for the short term.
He and Pritchard are not likely to be here next season.
which is why I'd try to move both for KO and Vanderbilt
I love Grant but he has played very poorly over the last 1.5 months it feels like. I think the only way he is traded is if it's for a player that will replace and upgrade his minutes. If not then I doubt he goes anywhere. I'm sure his price will come down but if it doesn't they he may walk for nothing if another team with cap space likes him and wants to start him. Always that chance and the team knows it.
I've proposed elsewhere and still think this is a good trade for both teams (it would be done as 2 using the TPE)
Olynyk, Gay, Vanderbilt for Gallinari, G. Williams, Pritchard, Jackson, Cash, HOU 2nd
That to me solves a lot of the issues on the team. We get 2 rotations players (KO, Vanderbilt) for 1 rotation player (Grant) and overall upgrade the talent. The Jazz get some young guys that Ainge clearly likes (since he drafted them), another 2nd round pick, cash, and save a fair amount of money this year. If it took a protected 1st instead of the 2nd, I'd probably do that, but wouldn't want to take Gay back in that scenario.
I agree. That’s a solid trade scenario and makes sense for both sides. Tp.
The thing I look it is the chemistry of the team. What is Brad willing to disrupt to get better. Grant is a main rotation piece. What is his relationship like with the rest of the team? Will moving him cause disruption? I really don't think so. If gallo didn't tear his ACL I'm not sure the C's would need to do anything. Gallo was going to be a great fit for this team. I'm not sure it's a guarantee he's moved. I see PP, Jackson, TPE as the most likely pieces.
I don’t think inserting Kelly for Grant and Kornet’s minutes is going to destroy the teams chemistry. Olynyk is also a better option than a healthy Gallo, IMO. He’s several years younger and better defensively. Gay has been in the league a long time, I’m sure he can figure out how to fit in for 10mpg.
Gay is just filler. I don't expect him to play much. The other rotation player is Vanderbilt. I think he'd be pretty solid. That would push all of Tatum's minutes to SF, which I also think is beneficial and solves the back-up wing issue.
If we made that trade I'd envision something like this in the playoffs
PG - Smart 34, White 14
SG - Brown 28, Brogdon 20
SF - Tatum 38, Brown 10
PF - Horford 10, Olynyk 24, Vanderbilt 14
C - Rob 30, Horford 18
Something like that. In the regular season obviously I'd like to see some reduced minutes from Smart, Brown, and Tatum with more minutes going to White and Brogdon. Guys like Gay, Kornet, and Griffin would be injury replacement type players.
