Speaking of young underperforming PFs what is happening with Markkanen. Can we low-ball our way into a rotation ready stretch 4?
There is this from Bleacher Report:
[Fischer] Dallas, New Orleans, Boston, and Minnesota have all shown interest in signing Markkanen to deals worth around $15 million in average annual value, sources said, but the Bulls are seeking a first-round pick in exchange for helping facilitate the transaction.

Not sure I want Markkanen at $15M/yr, but interesting that the Cs were mentioned. Also, at the end of the article (and since this is a Schroder thread), there was this...whatever it means:
The Celtics are exploring trade opportunities for point guard Kris Dunn and forward Bruno Fernando before concluding conversations with free agent Dennis Schroder.
I’m skeptical of that report. We’d presumably need to trade Smart.
I guess we can go crazy and sign both Schroder and Markannen.
Horford / Timelord / Kanter
Markannen / (Tatum) / Parker
Tatum / Nesmith
Brown / Richardson / Romeo
Schroder/ Pritchard
Upside?
Richardson would work in a Markkanen S&T instead of Smart. It would keep us below the hard cap (although subject us to it), and year one of Markkanen could start at $14.6 million, certainly getting him above $15 million for an average annual value on a 3-4 year deal with raises.
I don’t see us doing it, but perhaps I’m biased in that I don’t think Markkanen is worth $15 million a year.
Could we do the following?
1. Sign and trade for Markannen. We send out Smart,
and Dunn, most likely to a third-party who sends Minny a first rounder.
2. Sign and trade Schroder into our TPE, giving the Lakers a trade exception.
3. Bring over YAM and sign him to a four year deal using our MLE.
4. Cut Parker for cap reasons if necessary.
Is it possible to do that under the hard cap?
Depends how much you’re signing Schroeder for (assuming Markkanen is getting ~$15 million).
Personally, I’d rather have our current roster and future cap space. There are some interesting players who might hit restricted free agency next year that could be had if we miss out on Beal. I don’t think Markkanen is any kind of game-changer.
I think that restrictive free agency is mostly a fools errand, and any offer sheet would be contingent on blowing up a majority of our roster.
That said, I haven’t looked at next year’s restricted class. I just assume that anybody good is going to be locked up by their team.
There’s some thought Memphis isn’t comfortable with giving Jaren Jackson Jr. the max. Collin Sexton also seems like he will be available. And I’m personally curious to see if Phoenix will find the money to extend both Ayton and Mikal Bridges given how much they’ve got committed to Booker and Paul. They also have Landry Shamet as an RFA.
Edit: Also Bagley out of Sacramento seems a given if they don’t trade him this offseason. And I’m not sure how I feel about either, but it seems certain that Orlando won’t extend both Wendell Carter Jr. and Mo Bamba. Lastly, it feels like Denver will have to choose between coming to a new deal with Aaron Gordon and retaining Michael Porter Jr.
It feels like next year is the year to potentially get something good out of restricted free agency. I could of course be wrong, as that is historically not the case.
