Shooting with size?

My prediction: Ainge is going to stand pat at the deadline and say they’re pretty happy with how Daniel, Grant and Semi have progressed and they felt like they didn’t need to make a move at the deadline. “We’re pretty happy with the guys we’ve got here”

And then lose in the second or third round again

BUT, I really don't consider barnes an actual shooter. He's like every player we have - a bunch of guys who can shoot.

He's a career 38% shooter from 3 and he's been right at 40% for the past 3 seasons. He's not Curry, but he'd be an absolute upgrade over what we currently have.

The only 'all-in' trade I would be for is John Collins. I know it isn't TPE-related, but he is the only guy out there that we can reasonably acquire who still has All-Star potential. Yes, I realize he would need to be paid this off-season, but I'd imagine the plan would be to match whatever offer he receives if we did trade for him.

Don't get me wrong, Barnes, Gordon, and even Winslow are nice options; I just don't want to trade all of our future draft picks and top prospects for them.

"There were a few deals that interested us, but not at the right price"

To be honest though, I do feel like this year there is actually a substantive trade for the Celtics.

All talk, deadline will pass with no moves and they will make excuses.
Danny has always negotiated from the position of strength.
When he is the initiating party in trade talks he seldom has done deals. That’s why you have heard his generic excuses / comments after each trade deadline he stands pat.
He has to find a trading partner that doesn’t expect us to blow them out with our offer. I’m not sure he’s capable of that.
an interesting point. would you be able to show the data that supports this point? or perhaps links to sources that confirm this?

thanks.

My guess is that statement is true for every GM.  For every deal that gets done, I suspect there are many more discussions that come up empty.  It’s not just a Danny thing.

GMs often say that <1% of trade discussions result in deals. Danny is not alone.

It's pretty cheeky to complain about Danny's trade frequency, or success rate. And I think it's entirely credible for Danny to roll out the 'sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't do' POV, considering he's made more trades per in his tenure that any GM in the NBA, and it's hard to find a deal he's "lost".

Now.... track record picking in in the teens of the first round of the NBA draft? Complain away.

I could see 2 1st round picks being in play for Barnes or Gordon.   They are likely worth one high pick (not a top 5) and let's be honest, the Celtics are unlikely to have one of those while Tatum and Brown are in Boston and healthy.

How do you mean? I would certainly agree that he has more than just a shooter, but he brings just about everything that a shooter does.

He's not a korver, reddick type. When you hear those guys names you think - shooter.

Which is what this team needs, not saying those guys specifically. The type.

While I'd definitely take barnes, I just think he's more of what we already have and his jumper will disappear when needed because that's what happens when you have too much of the same player.

So he's good at other stuff too? Bonus!

I think I follow the difference being suggested. I'd love to have a guy in his prime who can come off picks and fire sharks-with-frockin-laser-beams-on-them with an ultra quick release. But I don't see such a guy in the league right now that's even remotely available.

It's not just that. This team has too many guys that do a bunch of things really well but nothing great.

We need guys with specified roles. Guys who get those roles because that's what they are.

I actually like barnes and like I said I'd take him, just not sure how much better he actually makes us.

Harrison Barnes' three point percentage is impressive but his volume is only average. Around 4 attempts per game despite playing 35mpg last 4-5 years.

Now his teammate, Buddy Hield, that is what a shooter looks like = 10 attempts a night on 40% accuracy.

Volume + shooting efficiency. Gotta put them together.

Barnes' big issue offensively over the course of his career has been that he is either an (1) isolation player, or a, (2) spot up shooter.

He has little in between. He doesn't dribble the ball well. He doesn't pass the ball well. That makes him limited in team offense outside of floor spacing - where his volume of outside shooting is merely average which caps his value in terms of team offense.

That has resulted in Barnes having less of an impact on his team's offenses than his scoring numbers suggest (17ppg last 5 years). His one-on-one play is not efficient enough / of a high enough standard to push his team's offense forward + he gets more of them playing on bad teams than he will get on a good team so his stats are inflated.

So his scoring will decrease on a better team (because of less so-so efficiency wise isos) and Barnes will become more reliant on his team offense where he has significant deficiencies. On a better team, one should expect Barnes to be more of a 12-14ppg scorer like he was earlier in his career than the 17ppg variety because of the decrease in isos + limitations in ball-handling / passing + average volume spot up shooter rather than the highly efficient outside shooter he is being portrayed as.

--------------------

His assist numbers have been better this season but I haven't watched any Kings games this year so I don't know how much to read into that (only 20 games). I am skeptical of this sudden growth because of his lack of improvement as both a ball-handler and passer throughout his career.

I just love the volume of shooters that some of the competition has this year. With PP and Kemba back we begin to get some of that feel.  If Grant, Semi, Theis and Marcus can get that reliable feel - that’s great, but I’m not feeling it yet.  Actually Theis been looking solid from distance recently.  Of course Carson and Nesmith could get there.    But one or 2 legit, ready snipers would go a long way to  strengthen this team.  Along with defense at the 5.
