I like the signing. Considering we only had 5m, the choices would have been much worse then Kanter.
Plusses:

1. He seems to pull down a ton of rebounds in limited minutes so that is a plus.

2. He can shoot FT’s at a good rate of 78% so this is not Monroe who could not hit the side of a barn while at the line- another plus.

3. I do not see anyone on that list that would sign for 5m a year and come close to the numbers he could put up

4. Sully or Kanter? We made the right choice 😁

5. Smart is not being tossed for a big right now like Adams- Huge plus. Danny is not jettisoning 22 year old Brown for an above average big man-Plus times a thousand!

6. Seems durable with games he can play.

7. Probably took less money to join us which means he wants to wear Green. We know how important that is.

Questions and Concerns:

1. Why only one season over 30 mpg? That year he averaged 19 and 11. If we had a center playing 30 min a game and did that, we would be popping champagne non stop. Is conditioning the issue or something else?
2. Anyone have defensive stats on him?
3. Can he jump? His block total seems low and that is being kind. Like .4 a game low.
4. Young and bouncing around a lot. That is usually not a good sign minus Chauncey history.
5. Is he able to play in Toronto?

Kanter was 71st in defensive rating out of 72 qualifying centers.

He is the next to worst defensive center in the NBA.

ah don't worry about that , defense is over rated anyways .   He be great !

In watching Kanter's highlights, it seems clear that Kanter is an upgrade over Baynes. Kanter played well in the playoffs. Rebounding has been a major weakness for the Celts for the past few years. Kanter should fill a major need in rebounding. Clearly, Kanter will need defensive help. But Danny did a good job with this get, especially for the money. Hopefully, R.Williams can become a regular rotational player. I believe this will be a fun team to watch next year and I actually expect Boston to increase their win total from last year.

Its really time for CBS to start developing players and playing them. If Javalle McGhee can play in the NBA without shooting threes you need to get Robert Williams on the court.

All he's done is play young guys and develop them: Olynyk, Smart, Rozier, Brown, Tatum..heck, he even gave Semi Ojeleye meaningful playoff minutes as a rookie.

How many BIGS has he developed?

Fantastic get given the limited resources! I think DA has 1-2 more minimums left and then we’re done.

As much as we like talking about trades, I don’t see a trade actually happening. Smart is cost controlled. Brown, well, DA loves his prospects. There’s no one left on the roster tradable.

He is the next to worst defensive center in the NBA.

Kanter didn’t even have the worst DRtg among centers on the Portland roster.

And, his Portland DRtg of 109 was tied for 56th out of 102 centers.

Link

DRtg is a terrible metric for individual players, but it measures Kanter’s defense closer to mediocre than terrible.

I just read how Kanter fasted during the playoffs starting May 5th to observe Ramadan.  Looking at his game log, his production dropped off dramatically at that point.  Not sure what to think of that.

Definitely not second to worst in the league. Mediocre D and can score and rebound for 5m a year. I will take that all day long right now. Who are top five worst centers on D? Curious!!

"beggers can't be choosers"

It is a blessing that Kanter signed for the mid level exception

Without him signing, the Celts would have been....

I really like bringing Kanter in.  He can do what he is good at and Brad will accentuate that.

Kanter is one of the best rebounders in the league.  When is the last time we had a rebounder!!!

exactly

Al Horford and Baynes were only mediocre rebounders that got by

but Kanter is rock solid....  on the flipside the focus on perimeter D etc. is not as strong.

CBS will just need to figure it out and put it all together

He’s not a good defender, but at 1:19 Stotts looked like he was ushering Kanter back, telling him to sag
