Hayward himself not ruling out a return.

I'm going with what the man himself says.
yes, i am quite sure that no pre-existing preference on your part entered into this in the least.  ::)

With the way GH talks about it, especially in light of Stevens' comments that he is not returning, I think GH is just using the thought of playing again ASAP as motivation to keep up the daily grind.

I don't think he's coming back.  Nor do I want him to.  We're not legit contenders till next season, why risk further injury? He could easily get hurt again if he's not in it 100% psychologically or physically, and that was a serious injury.

I had the same injury of my arm/wrist. Probably only halfway to recover after.... 2 surgeries (3rd soon), staph infection that spread to the bone (daily IV antibiotic tx), plates and screws, now a 12 inch rod in my arm, PT 2 days/week, etc.  I haven't returned to eating applesauce yet, let alone $100mil professional activities.

Why keep saying we are not legit contenders?

the team has been awesome and IMO legit eastern contenders since the AS break.

we only need to get past the Raptors who stilll really need to prove anything on the big stage and the Cavs are not winnning anything this year...

The ream has been coming together well post AS break and Kyrie hasn't even gone onto his other gear yet.

MassLive is reporting that Gordon suffered a setback to his recovery about a month and a half ago.

Quote
Boston Celtics team president of basketball operations Danny Ainge revealed Thursday that injured star Gordon Hayward suffered a setback about a month and a half ago.

The revelation help explains why the Celtics have grown more pessimistic recently with their public stance on Hayward's recovery. Though Hayward said last week he still has hope of returning this season, head coach Brad Stevens has said the All-Star will not play again until the 2018-19 campaign.

"Gordon is progressing in his rehab. He's doing great," Ainge said during his weekly interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich. "He's had like one setback for a couple of weeks, maybe a month and a half ago. Just we were progressing a little bit too fast, we thought. But other than that, his work ethic and his determination have been amazing.

Hayward gave an update on his progress last week, saying the next step for him would be to start running without the aid of an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill. At the time, Hayward said he was running with 70 percent of his body weight.

"I don't want to get people's hopes up," Ainge said. "He still is not back on the basketball court, and we have a month left in the regular season. So he's got a ways to go, but we're excited about his progress and his determination."

No connections, but allow me to speculate:

Initial healing went great. Virtually no swelling by the time the brace came off full time. Then the workouts began and the ankle started swelling. At first they were freaked out, but it became clear that the swelling was due to normal spike in tissue stress after such a long layoff. Nevertheless, it set Hayward back a week or so and encouraged the team to take it slow going forward.

Yeah I bet Hayward just had a lot of swelling after he initially shocked the ankle with work. So they’ve slowed down his progression as a result.

Ainge doesn’t sound worried, but he probably is letting the fans know not to expect him this year.

Sounds about right.  He had to do a second session on the machine that takes body weight off of his ankle to build it up to 100%.  I'm sure that was around the time of the setback.

Yes, that makes sense. I hope it wasn't anything more than that. He's extremely unlikely to be back this year then (not that I expected him to).

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

New vid of Hayward jogging.

Yeah, that looks like quite the opposite to me.  Looks to be a long ways away and kinda looks fat (for a world class athlete that is).

What are you guys basing this on?  Sounds like complete speculation.

Are players who are jogging on the court almost always 3+ months away from returning to action?

Stevens estimated him at 20% speed.  Say next week 40%.  Then 60%.  Three weeks from now 80%.  That slow progression has him running full speed in a month.  Another ~3 weeks of jumping, strengthening, lateral drills, contact drills.  That brings us to the ECF.  If he still hasn't seen any swelling from practicing at full contact, do you still sit him out?

I find it funny that some people think it's less likely a player progresses regularly, and more likely they stall or setback their recovery.  And of course, coming along ahead of schedule is impossible.  If you're gonna speculate, you might as well speculate BOTH ways.

Hayward, who planned on playing again this year, has suffered one 2 week setback.  He has continued to progress normally for the other 6 months of his rehab.  Assuming he wasn't just expecting to come back for the last 2 weeks, a single 2 week setback isn't a death sentence.  If the Celtics go far into the playoffs, it is still doable.  There's 11 weeks of basketball left.

Stevens said he might make the Washington trip.  Obviously not dressed to play or anything, but having him there and practicing with the team is another huge step toward coming back.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale
