Monroe Buyout / Signing with Celtics (merged threads)

Monroe, whose buyout is now official, has spoken to both the Celtics and Pelicans and could make a decision within the next 24 hours, tweets John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7. If it comes down to those two teams, Monroe would have to weigh an increased role in New Orleans vs. a greater chance to win a title in Boston.

Scott Kushner of The Advocate tweeted earlier today that the acquisition of Mirotic won’t adversely affect New Orleans’ pursuit of Monroe.

So do you guys think we offer the full 8.4 million? I mean he probably isn't worth that for half a season but what else we gonna do with the dpe?

I agree with this. (Although you can't split up the DPE to acquire more than one player, so not sure if you meant someone instead of Monroe with the DPE, which could happen, or someone in addition to Monroe using the DPE for both, which isn't allowed.)

That being said, Ive been a Moose fan for a long time, but if he picks NO over us, I lose all respect for him, because he would've given up learning from and playing for a great coach as well as being on a contender. If he take that route, he's a lot dumber than I thought with messed up priorities.

Yeah I meant it as not wanting to pay him that much ($8.4M for maximum 29 regular season games?) because we are bidding against ourselves. Maybe he would rather save it for someone else on the horizon (via trade).

I too was always a fan of his kinda throwback game, and I would be very happy if we got him but not overly mad if we didn’t. We scrutinize guys for chasing rings all the time. If he just wants to play and be close to home, that’s his prerogative.

Either way, I don’t think just adding him propels us too much higher (Hayward return notwithstanding), but he AND Evans may.

That would be very reasonable, but is it really long-term or just 3 months? After they traded for Mirotic, and having to re-sign Cousins this summer, will they really be able to keep Monroe?

That's an interesting point, except they can't resign him next year. They won't have his bird rights and they won't have cap space to do so. They might already be in the luxury tax before they even can approach the idea of signing Monroe.

My working theory is that if he goes there, the Pelicans have explained to him that they do not intend to resign Cousins. In that case, Cousins might even get moved pre-deadline.

Maybe an exchange of Lopez for Cousins makes sense to both teams. Cousins goes the LA and gets used to the lights to make him more likely to sign there in the summer. Lopez gives a solid center on an expiring contract for the Pelicans to make a push this year and have flexibility moving forward.

 have heard the Celtics would like Tyreke Evans and are willing to talk moving their own first round pick, but want to send a player(s) to Memphis, to conserve the DPE for use on another player. They don't want to just let go of the $5M in salary difference between Evans & DPE.

If Hayward is not going to be available even deep into the playoffs, I haven't been in favor of bringing in talent in exchange for anything other than money, but if you can get Monroe for just cash and Evans for basketball assets, that's a pretty tempting talent infusion. We shouldn't criticize Monroe, however, if he chooses to go home to New Orleans and probably get big minutes for short money as opposed to questionable minutes and lots of money from the Celtics. That would be a sign of character, something that's becoming rarer and rarer in pro sports.

Disagree. Maybe he sees himself as being a key piece in NO. They have an MVP-level player in Davis, which is the first and critical step toward being a contender. Mirotic and Holiday are good players. They have some other decent pieces. It's not insane to think that NOP could become a legit team if a few dominoes fall into place. Think of the Warriors when they had an injury-prone Steph Curry and not much else.

Heck, maybe they can think of a way to turn Demarcus Cousins into something of value.

If he become available, he might be a better option because of his versatility and just being a better overall offensive player than Monroe (although GM is a better rebounder so there is cost benefit analysis to be taken into account). Monroe choosing NO (if he indeed does) might be a blessing in disguise.

I'm actually not against this as long as Lopez could put his ego aside.  AND.....if he wasn't Sheed 2.0 doing nothing but shooting 3's.
