He IS an average drafter I think. His results aren't especially good, but they're not especially bad either.
By my count he's drafted:
1 generational talent -
Rondo - He's the best pure passing point guard of his generation. You can say a lot negative about him, but Rondo in his prime was a force. Dwayne Wade at the height of his powers literally had to "unintentionally" dislocate Rondo's Elbow on the court to stop him in a playoff series.
1 All star caliber player -
Al Jefferson - Injury prone, but in his prime a nightly 20-10 threat in an era when both post scoring and rebounding were things big men were still expected to do.
3 solid starters -
I'd name Avery Bradley, Delonte West, and player 3. I tentatively have Rozier as player three (I think he's the next extremely solid Ainge pick), but if you love Marcus Smart, Tony Allen, or Jared Sullinger so much that you feel they deserve to be in that spot, I'm cool with that... I'll give you one of them, but just one don't get greedy.
6 specialists that would find a role on most teams -
This is where I'd put Marcus Smart, Tony Allen, Glen Davis, Jared Sullinger, Kendrick Perkins, and Kelly O. I don't think any of these guys provided the complete game you're looking for from a lottery pick, but they could start on the right team and be fine. On most teams they'd at least find a role and on some teams they'd fill out the end of the bench, but would still wind up with some minutes.
1 Jaylen Brown -
Some people love Jaylen Brown! Some people hate Jaylen Brown! I have no idea if he'll be good or not, but how about those dunks!
A bunch of JAGS and busts - Many of these players are close to my heart Leon Powe, E'twuan Moore, Marcus Banks, Brandon Hunter, Ryan Gomes, Justin Reed, Gerald Green, James Young, Lester Hudson, and Gabe Pruitt are all players I was still talking myself into until as recently as yesterday.
While you can look back at Ainge Drafts and look at some very depressing misses, I think if you rate him against all other GM's he's at least an average drafter. Is that in itself disappointing? Maybe, but with the aforementioned track record I think it's hard to argue he's flat out horrible.
