Do you still have hope for James Young?

As others have said, the case of Getald Green and youth are on his side. And while this team isn't a contender, as many have pointed out, this team has a ton of depth. So even if he was playing ok in practice, he wouldn't get a chance.

Even Avery Bradley needed an injury to Ray Allen to break in. And while that team was obviously way better than this one, this team probably has more depth.

So I'll say Young still has a shot, but it doesn't look good, particularly if we expect it to happen on this team.

Its weird with Young because in Greens case, he clearly had all the tools. His calling card was athleticism and he was clearly an elite athlete. he also shot the 3 pretty well (37% in his second season).
Youngs calling card was shooting and he doesnt seem to possess that skill.

I don't have much hope, since I am generally pessimistic about all-offense no-defense wings who aren't really that good at offense anyways, and I strongly suspect he ends up getting cut outright to clear a roster spot for one of the rookies who will be drafted this summer.

You can't be afraid to waive players like this, if you think there are better options.  You have to trust in your decision making process and not worry that you might look foolish if he ends up being useful somewhere else.  If some other NBA team picks him up and he gives them 8-10ppg off the bench with bad defense, I won't miss him.

I think he had a shot this year and faltered.   I think he lacks confidence, and this is a killer to someone's game.  Pretty clear he came out too early from college.   He was not ready, he is still young but each year, I hope he takes some steps forward, but each year it is dwindling.

He may need to go the route of the Holland guy DA signed.   I think that is sign Young is finished in Boston myself.

He may susceed yet , but he has chosen the LONG way ...if he does .

Circumstances have led to Young being in a kind of limbo. One of those circumstances has been his inability to break into the rotation by impressing. I am guessing he hasn't impressed when with Maine or his attitude/approach to basketball. His Maine numbers aren't hopeless (or amazing) but it is D league.

As an aside I wonder if the D league has advantages for very young players, rather than extra years at college, in terms of preparation for the NBA?

The circumstances surrounding the Celtics don't help Young much either if his aim is to get NBA game time sooner rather than later. The draft and free agency should/will move him further down the pecking order. A move will help him if he can find a team interested in him or his potential as trade filler.

I hope he finds his place but I think circumstances (some in and some beyond his control) will limit his opportunities and career as a Celtic.

Throw in the three rookies from the previous draft who got basically no playing time this year.  I'd rank him behind all three.

No question, Young's chances of earning much playing time are entirely dependent on a trade.

I have no hope for Young and consider him a bust - certainly more than open to moving him if the price is right.

He hasn't played much but when he has he has shot terribly - if he was worthy of playing he would be. He would have earned it.

Even good shooters often require time to get used to the NBA game, and minutes and shot opportunities to develop a rhythm.

If all you can do is shoot (seems to be the case with Young), you're going to have a tough time just earning enough minutes to get that rhythm and confidence as a shooter.

He still hasn't really had a major opportunity for extended minutes.   We've seen players under Ainge's tenure having a couple redshirt years only to develop into rotation players (Perk comes to mind), but we've also seen some mid-to-late 1sts develop into nothing. 

I don't blame Young totally for the lack of minutes.  We have a lot of decent players getting minutes on this team.  All four of the prospects (Young, Rozier, Hunter, Mickey) were clearly going to spend the bulk of time in d-league this season.   But by year 2, you'd kind of expect Young to be getting a bit of time.  Perk only played 9 minutes per game for 60 games in his second year, so there's still some hope he'll follow that path and be ready for bench minutes next year, right?

Yeah he's just a baby.  I'd give him at least a few more years.

Since he's still the youngest guy on the team, yeah. It's looking more and more like he's not going to get an opportunity to break into this team's rotation, though. Even if he's got the talent.

If a trade clears the deck for him this summer, I wouldn't be surprised if he become a decent rotation player next year.

Next year is the end of the rope for me. He needs to show something...something at all. Like marked improvement. No more D league IMO.

I agree with this theory.  I was going to post something similar.  One thing that has to be added into mix. Young at a point will be traded as a younger guy with potential or he'll walk to another team and we won't be compensated.  Ainge needs to add him to package with that potential youth title as I don't see young taking minutes from anyone on current team much less new high draft picks.
