I don't have any expectations for him, but I do have some hope.  I was just reading about CJ McCollum as many are predicting him to win MIP.  He came into the league at age 22.  He didn't do much his first two years and just broke out this year at age 24.  Young is still just 20.

I don't see James Young on this team next year. He and Mickey have taken turns being the last man at the end of the bench all season and Young has had an extra year to develop. Young is also up against a deep backcourt of talented players while Mickey should get an opportunity given Amir, Sully and Jerebko aren't guaranteed to be back.

I think it's best to include Young as filler in a larger trade or to trade him with a heavily protected 2nd rounder to dump him. Either way, trade him to open a spot for someone useful to take his place. Young is done here in Boston.

I think there's hope for Young to make the rotation on some other team if he's traded, but there's no hope for him in Boston. There is too much depth here. Young needs to go to a bad team with little depth where he can get rotation minutes, and he might have an NBA career. More likely, though, he wastes away on the end of our bench and never gets another contract.

Young is a classic example of someone who should've stayed in college a year longer. He just wasn't talented enough to make the leap to the NBA at age 19.

Not with us.

There could still be a market for young (pun ABSOLUTELY intended) SG/SF wing who can shoot (or atleast he's billed as a guy who can shoot).

loco_91 is spot on, though. The problem facing him with Boston is he is so down the list of the pecking order that he will find opportunities very limited, and it would stunt his development. He needs to go to a team where he would consistently get playing time, even if it's 8-12 minutes a game to see what he really has, and he's got some tools to be a solid rotation player, or even a good starting SG.

I'd ask for him if I'm Washington, try to develop him to be the third guard in that lineup. Surely  they can do better than having Garret Temple and Marcus Thornton in their wing rotation spot, and he's got the potential to take over those two if he pans out.

Still 20, plenty of room to improve.

the other day, did you see rj crossover go down the middle of paint,  i think he was using his left dribbling
he faded faded to left and put it up right handed falling sidways to his left and the floater was sublime
that was better than any three, as he navigated the paint with no fear ,no haste-that was no easy shot but it is one he is very familar with-poise,talent and bbiq -i sat there and clapped-
-i have been disappointed in rj as early in the year, he showed promise ,i watched him with red claws not good
but that one play did it again and he hit a couple threes

Nope, none.  I don't care that he is only 20.  This is a young man's league and plenty of 20-year olds have impressed.  More importantly however, is the fact that he hasn't done anything to give me hope.  His best skill is 3-point shooting and he hasn't done that very well.

I agree. McCollum didn't do much, but he showed glimpses of the talent he had. Young hasn't shown me anything that could/should make me excited about the player that he will become in the future.

I definitely think there is hope for him, but probably will bloom elsewhere.  Most likely he's a mild swetener in a bigger deal, but i could also see all sorts of packaging possibilities with Young plus 16, 23, 31 and/or 35 to move up if there is someone available late lottery that Danny likes.

Bust!
Avery Bradley's rookie season and Perk's first 2 years are what gives me some hope for Young.

We've seen players redshirted and still be successful here.   We have to acknowledge that one of the main reasons he isn't getting minutes here is a roster loaded with NBA-level talent.

If the player were to move on and become a serviceable part of another teams roster, so be it..

With all the draft picks this year he is replaceable in a heartbeat.

2 seasons is more than enough time which at the moment = bust

i mean, he is not a bust, he just doesn't qualify for that term hence being picked above 10th pick.
rookie took his job, game over
and i can't understand the support and the level of faith some people have in him, when he is a clear cut swing and miss by danny ainge along with pruit, walker, giddens, melo...

I honestly don't think any team should be willing to give up a second round pick to get Young or to accept him in lieu of one in a trade. It's unlikely that the Celtics will be in a position for the cap space from not having to waive him to be worth more than the pick you might give up in a deal.  The Celtics have a bright enough future that sending out a top-55 protected second has a chance of actually conveying.  The deal that makes sense is Young and $2 million (giving the other team a small profit if they waive Young outright) for the draft rights to some other team's equivalent of Ben Pepper if the Celtics really need cap space.

I'll be nice and give him a 10% chance of sticking in the league.

Maybe now is his time. Give us a boost
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.
