Avery Bradley's rookie season and Perk's first 2 years are what gives me some hope for Young.

We've seen players redshirted and still be successful here.   We have to acknowledge that one of the main reasons he isn't getting minutes here is a roster loaded with NBA-level talent.

Here? Not really. He's not taking minutes from IT, AB, Smart, Crowder, ET, or the Nets Pick/free agents. He's also shown significantly less promise than Rozier, and less than Hunter. Maybe he'll make it somewhere, but I have little reason to believe he will. We should've taken Rodney Hood.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

He's skilled, but looks like too much of a push-over to make it in this league.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
He's too timid, but he's young so it's still to early to put a fork in it.

Whatever happens I trust that Danny and Brad gave him a fair shake.

Meh.  I don't think about James Young.

That doesn't mean I've "given up hope" for him.  I just don't think about him because he's not relevant to how the team is playing right now.

With guys like Young, we have very little clue as to how Danny & Brad view him.  They have more information than we do.  I'll trust they'll figure out what to do with him.

The NBA is tough.  Across the 30 teams this year, this is how the players were distributed by years of experience and the simple median number of minutes a player of each class got.  Note that this list counts anybody who got even one minute on an NBA roster.

Rookies:    71  ( 395)
2nd year:  63  ( 625)
3rd year:  46  (1376)
4th year:  47  (1130)
5th year:  34  (1683)
6th year:  32  (1603)
7th year:  32  (1626)
8th year:  33  (1505)
9th year:  22  (1615)
10th year: 14 (1733)
11th year: 18 (1498)
12th year: 16 (1073)
13th year: 18 (1365)
14th year:   8 ( 756)
15th year:   6 (1966)
16+ years: 13 (1189)

Some interesting notes from this:

1) 'Pretty harsh cut down of about 25% not getting their option exercised past the 2nd year.   Another harsh cut down of about the same not getting a deal after their rookie contract is up.
2) Once it's whittled down to about half the original class, those guys seem to stick for another contract.
3) The guys who last 9+ are cut down by another half again.  What's interesting when you look at the actual lists of guys who are lasting that long, even though the median minutes start to decline, most of the real workhorses for minutes are in these later years.  The guys in the top half of these classes are piling on big minutes.  Probably because they are getting paid a lot and teams depend on them.
4) Interesting how the 3rd years, often criticized as a 'weak' draft, have a significantly higher median minutes than the two supposedly stronger drafts before and after.  Kelly is exactly the median for his class.
5) James Young has totaled 199 minutes this year, so he's well below the median for his class - but the median for 2nd years is so small, I don't know if that means anything.
6) The 5th year class (Kawhi, Klay, Isaiah, Butler, etc.) has 13 guys all well over 2000 minutes.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

There's a slim chance of Young becoming an NBA player---Because Perkins and Bradley both were horrible---BUT,I lean more towards JR Giddens, Gabe Pruitt...etc.
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

It's within the realm of possibility that he's useful at some point, but I think it's fair to say that he's gone from a high-ceiling, low-floor guy to a guy whose ceiling is decent rotation player and whose floor is China as soon as next year.

At this point I'd rather put one of our billion 2016 second round picks on the roster.

He lost his confidence as a player. He is now struggling in the d-league. He was great in it last year. It's always been a mental thing for Young. It makes no sense he can't nail wide open threes since he has a track record of doing it in college and high school.

As mmmmm (hope I typed this right) showed, busts are very frequent in the NBA.

Now, if we cared about James development per se, the right thing would be, as Pho suggested, to maximize his chances of getting meaningful minutes thru a trade. But are we going to get in return? Young's trade value is near zero now (maybe a draft pick around 50?) and imagine us trading him to NYK only to see him blossom there. Point being, the other team gains something and we gain nothing...

From a purely egoistic point of view, the best thing we can do is keep him, give him some more opportunities and if he seizes them fine; if not, then China it is.

I like the kid, and I do not think hope is lost, I'd still give a 20-30% chance he turns into an NBA player.

hope for Young?  sure.

A lot of hope, no, not at all at this point.

I figured he'd need 2 years to get it together before being able to contribute a bit.  If he's just as clueless in the next training camp (provided he's still here) then I think he's toast
