Meh. I don't think about James Young.
That doesn't mean I've "given up hope" for him. I just don't think about him because he's not relevant to how the team is playing right now.
With guys like Young, we have very little clue as to how Danny & Brad view him. They have more information than we do. I'll trust they'll figure out what to do with him.
The NBA is tough. Across the 30 teams this year, this is how the players were distributed by years of experience and the simple median number of minutes a player of each class got. Note that this list counts anybody who got even one minute on an NBA roster.
Rookies: 71 ( 395)
2nd year: 63 ( 625)
3rd year: 46 (1376)
4th year: 47 (1130)
5th year: 34 (1683)
6th year: 32 (1603)
7th year: 32 (1626)
8th year: 33 (1505)
9th year: 22 (1615)
10th year: 14 (1733)
11th year: 18 (1498)
12th year: 16 (1073)
13th year: 18 (1365)
14th year: 8 ( 756)
15th year: 6 (1966)
16+ years: 13 (1189)
Some interesting notes from this:
1) 'Pretty harsh cut down of about 25% not getting their option exercised past the 2nd year. Another harsh cut down of about the same not getting a deal after their rookie contract is up.
2) Once it's whittled down to about half the original class, those guys seem to stick for another contract.
3) The guys who last 9+ are cut down by another half again. What's interesting when you look at the actual lists of guys who are lasting that long, even though the median minutes start to decline, most of the real workhorses for minutes are in these later years. The guys in the top half of these classes are piling on big minutes. Probably because they are getting paid a lot and teams depend on them.
4) Interesting how the 3rd years, often criticized as a 'weak' draft, have a significantly higher median minutes than the two supposedly stronger drafts before and after. Kelly is exactly the median for his class.
5) James Young has totaled 199 minutes this year, so he's well below the median for his class - but the median for 2nd years is so small, I don't know if that means anything.
6) The 5th year class (Kawhi, Klay, Isaiah, Butler, etc.) has 13 guys all well over 2000 minutes.
