Heard Bradley Beal was a target too.   Wonder what his asking price was.

That was Tanguay who said that right? Don't believe anything he says.

Mannix said it during the broadcast.

I think at the end of the day, Danny is open to any star available depending on the price. I wouldn't read too much into anything beyond that.

Melo's comfortable where he is.  Would rather finish his career in New York than build on his playoff resume.

From the talk you here, Melo's wife is comfortable where they are and does not want to leave.

Happy wife, happy life.
That's the way I see things with Melo. His wife and family are going to be in NY. That is fairly evident. If Melo has the ability to stay in NY and make huge cash and keep his family happy and well off, who are we to criticize the man? His family wants to be in NY. He wants to work in NY. He has a long term contract playing in NY. Why would he waive his no trade caluse? He has everything he wants. Its up to the front office to build the team around him, a top 10 NBA player.

The irony of Melo's situation is that he's carried out his career the way many fans would call "the right way" if it wasn't attached to him.  He pushed for one trade, to his hometown, and now seems to want to loyally stay there while a team is built around him.  He didn't try to join a superteam or try to skip town as soon as it was clear NY was a mess.  His assist rate is at a career high and his usage rate is nearly a career low.  But because he rubs people the wrong way, it's all taken as a negative.  It really is strange, almost like a milder version of how people used to react to Iverson.

I can totally understand why Melo would prefer to just stay in NY where he's happy and comfortable -- and where his wife is happy and comfortable.

And to be fair, if Melo came to the Celtics, it's not like they'd be a serious contender for the championship.

If Melo had the chance to join the Cavs, for example, and he turned that down, I might think of him differently.  But I don't begrudge him preferring a still-decent situation in New York to Boston, given that the Celts can't offer him the one thing missing from his career, which is a trip to the Finals.

I agree that he deserves more credit for making the best of a situation in New York that's been far from ideal since he got there.  Hopefully Phil keeps making good moves and Porzingis stays on a star trajectory.  Would be nice to see Melo go on a playoff run or two alongside Kristaps and company while he's still got big games in him.

Another assumption that is happening in this thread is everyone assumes the Boston offer would include the 2016 Nets pick. What if the proposal for Melo didn't include the 2016 Nets pick but the 2018 Nets pick and the 2 2016 non Nets picks? Would everyone be okay with that trade? Melo is a gigantic improvement offensively over any player on this team, never mind players playing in a position Melo would play at(SF or PF)!

If you could add Melo to this roster without giving up core players(Smart, Bradley, Crowder, Thomas) and have Melo as your number one scoring option late in games with Bradley, Thomas and Crowder as pass to options, I think you do the trade. I think that team with either a Sully/Olynyk front court player as well as a top 4 2016 draft pick as well as a possible free agent(Horford), could be looking at taking Cleveland deep into the ECFs and would need to be pursued.

Trade

To NYK: Olynyk, Johnson, 2018 Nets pick, 2016 Mavs pick, 2016 Celtics pick, 2 top 2nd rounders from Boston.

To Bos: Carmelo Anthony

Boston drafts Brandon Ingram and signs Al Horford.

Thomas/Smart/Rozier
Bradley/Smart/Hunter
Crowder/Ingram
Melo/Hordford/Mickey
Horford/Sully

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
Melo could still average 18-20 PPG even when hes aging. His game can adapt well in the future, especially if Stevens can integrate the right system to incorporate Melo well enough to get the open looks, and hes also improved as a passer. Props to Melo for that.

Melo with IT? Yikes. I wonder what the offer would've been, and how much of the roster we would've given up to have Melo on our team.

You get some good front court help, try to sign Horford, and that is going to be a team that can certainly go head to head with the Cavs. Shame. Melo doesn't seem to like Boston, and neither does Chris Paul. Anyway to do a 3 way team trade, Griffin to Celtics, Melo to Clippers, and players/picks to Knicks?

Absolutely, Phil Jackson's made some great moves (trading Chandler, signing value vets like Lopez, Afflalo, and Derrick Williams, not panicking and forcing a Brandon Jennings trade) that's put them back on the track to a successful playoff team. We're definitely positioned better at the moment but given New York's free agent pull that could change with one big signing and Porzingis has more upside than anyone on our roster while still being an effective player in the short term.

There are those that think that Derrick Fisher was always a placeholder coach once they lost out on Kerr. Not really a situation where they wanted someone awful so they could bottom out for a top pick in '15 but someone who could install aspects of the triangle while being a stopgap so that when they found their actual new coach (Thibs IMO) they'd be fielding a team ready to compete right away with no incentive to tank.

Melo put up with a lot of losing at the cost of his own reputation to get the team to where it is today, you'd imagine he wants to be apart of it once they start winning again.

Think New York's going to end up with either Conley or Rondo this offseason. I'm sure Melo wants to see what they do to upgrade the point before deciding to waive his no trade clause.

Aside from career earnings, Melo's NBA career has been largely mismanaged.

He has a hand in the mismanagement from poorly handling his impending FA status to encouraging the Knicks to trade for him (a situation they handled poorly).

During the 2014 off-season, he could've signed to the Bulls or Mavericks, which would've made either team into legitimate title contenders instead of resigning to a hapless Knicks team.

If this report is true, Melo lost an opportunity at being on a legitimate contender (which is what he would have made the C's if he embraced the 4 spot this year and Boston were able to sign a Horford/Whiteside in the offseason). As is, Melo's going to stick with the Knicks hoping that they assemble a winning team around him before he retires. They have a blue-chip prospect in Porzingis, but their fortunes are as tied to what they do in Free Agency as the Nets are.
