So, does anyone still think free agents are going to want to sign in Brooklyn?
This, plus what Pierce said a few months back, makes me think otherwise.
If they offer a second or third tier guy who has previously played for relatively small or lower profile markets a max contract, I think they'll have some pull. But they've got no shot at signing anybody major.
Demar Derozan feels like a future Net or Laker to me, for example.
Wouldn't shock me to see them sign Rondo.
I think they'll try to use their cap space a different way. If they can, they'll try to bring back Brook. Then use the remaining space to take 2-3 year bad deals (Gerald Wallace types) and collect 1st rounders (specifically 1sts in the years of 2017 and 2018, or 2017 rookies selected in June). Build around Bogdanovic, RHJ, T. Young, Lopez and a 1-2 of Larkin/TRob/McCullough, plus whoever they select with the aforementioned picks. Build a respectable foundation to attract free agents in 2018 + 2019, around the time they'll finally be free of the KG/Pierce trade.
maybe i'm biased, but IMO nets should admit total failure and start prepping for a 2019 rebuild now. they should pump up lopez' and thad's value and ship them out for whatever picks they can get.
get creative with cap space and make trades for toxic contracts, getting extra draft picks back as compensation.
sign free agents/partially guaranteed contracts and flip them at the deadline for more picks.
let your fanbase know you have a plan to build around youth, but it will take a few years, and basically use whatever means you can to get young talent for a real rebuild in 2019.
I'm
absolutely biased but believe that's the best strategy, regardless. Trade for picks in 2018/19, maybe one in 17. If you have a top-10 team now that think it needs a single piece to win the whole thing, a 2016 draft pick won't do you much good, because it's going to be at the end of the draft. But who knows what that team will look like in three years? That draft pick could be a very good one. And teams won't feel like they are giving away as much because of the time value of
money draft picks.
Downside: An owner who may be looking to sell the team and would rather have a winner now than a loser with long-term potential.

Bring back Brook? He just signed a multi-year deal last summer.
Must be a stars wars reference
Not sure if serious, but I haven't seen it yet, so please keep all Star Wars talk to the Star Wars thread!
I don't think I'm giving anything away when I say that I had absolutely no interest in Star Wars (I took my son because he wanted to see it.) and I thought it was one of the best movies I've seen in the past couple of years. Enjoy!
