Why Mickey isn't signed yet

Mickey's probably looking at the increasing cap and all the money being thrown at players, and thinking he wants to hit the open market in a year or two rather than four.

I don't think you can fault him for that, or for betting on his own success.

Interesting angle here if this becomes more the norm: will players prefer to get drafted in the second round rather than the late first? It almost seems like the guaranteed money of first round contracts could become more an advantage for teams than for players.

He's barely going to play this season. Better to take that 4 year deal and guarantee some money than risk the restricted market after the season. Sounds to me he doesn't like where he landed and wants to avoid the D league if possible.

He's not a franchise changer but I hope we don't lose him over this. I realized KJ Mcdaniels did the same thing. Why do these guys do this? Do they think someone will offer them big money after a rookie year likely split between the D League and the end of a bench?

They don't want to be in the situation that Chandler Parsons was in, where the Rockets could have exercised a fourth-year option.

If I were Mickey, I'd be asking for the Celtics to dip into cap space to give a starting salary that is more than the rookie minimum.

Jordan Mickey is looking more valuable every game.. he's been the most consistent player in Summer League and I bet he feels that way too. If we have to pay him then so be it, just lock him up to a lengthy one.

Yes, this is a flaw. 1st round are tide no matter what for 4 years if the FO chose to. But 2nd rounders get leverage and this stupid 1 year tender.

1st rounders get guaranteed contracts. The tender is unguaranteed.

Wow thats a crazy deal for a player drafted #43! Especially taken into consideration that Hunter will "only" make $957,200 this season !
Makes you question people who claim that an early 2nd rounder is better than a late 1st rounder contract wise

 Reading between the lines, I think a few things happened on draft night that set this  situation up.

If  you guys recall, when Mickey was drafted by us at 33 he didn't look too pleased.

 He may not  have been given a  promise by us at 28, but I think it may have been intimated  to him.  The reason I say this is because after the draft it was said that the Celtics were surprised that Hunter fell  to us at 28 and were holding their breath on Mickey at 33 .

Now  Mickey  wants what he thinks is his: first round pay.
