This thread says more about how hungry we are for something, anything to get excited about than it says about how James Young is coming along.

I also wish James Young was exploding into summer league like Aaron Gordon, but I've got no idea what these summer league games are actually telling us. I hope he's out there trying to play a role with 3 other dudes on the floor who in free-for-all and blowing it up. I don't know. We've got enough d-league data to know he can at least shoot a lot better than this. Maybe if the coaches were telling him to go play hero ball he'd do some amazing stuff and he's look like Justice Winslow. In short, I don't see anything good happening but I hesitate to focus on the bad.

They're telling you that good players should dominate in this d-league environment, like Smart and Gordon have. That Young is 'over thinking' summer league games should make you hesitate, considering all the discussion of the leap everyone thought he'd make -- particularly mentally, where he looks absolutely lost.

James Young is still very, very raw.

We shouldn't be that surprised that playing in the D-League all last season didn't teach him how to play professional basketball.

He should have stayed in school, honestly.

He should probably go back to school and get a degree so he can have a career because I doubt it will be in the NBA.

Young is too trigger happy right now. When i see him shoot, he is not in balance 80 percent of the time.

He needs to take the ball to the basket more at 1st. Get some ft in that will help him with his stroke

When he drives he bounces off defenders and lands on the court. He's not strong enough to absorb and get an "and-one". Then he's iffy at the FT line at best.

I don't mind the poor shooting. We know he can shoot as evidence of his performance in the D League.  It's the fact that he just stands around the rest of the time.

It's psychological for Young. Can't get out of his own head.

Doc Rivers, is that you?

I don't get it.

Young is fine. He problem is a lack of NBA reps. This is due to the Celtics being  horrendous at developing talent and JamesYoung youth.

You think Stevens is horrendous at developing youth?  You might have a point if Rivers was still coaching.

I think this roster and the turnover of players is making it difficult to give young players consistent roles / minutes to aid in their development.

Young's problem is that he doesn't have wing skills. He can't create off the dribble because he has no right hand whatsoever so everyone knows where he's going when he puts it on the floor and they just slide over easily. In any sport, when you know which direction your opponent is going every time, it makes defending them easy. His shooting is mediocre at best. His defense is laughable. He has no confidence.

Just don't see him as an NBA player

I don't think that was a problem last season.  But unless Ainge cleans up this roster, it will be this upcoming season.
