Smart was not drafted 6th to be a guy coming off the bench for the forseeable future.  He can play the sg position but is really better suited to play the point. He would have size adv to post up etc.

Imo Smart needs time to develop/gain experience at the pg position in the nba. If you want Rondo to be the teams pg , then eventually smart will be the one leaving(or traded).

If given the choice which guy would you want /starting leading the team at the pg position for the next 5 years?

It depends.

Do we get a fair trade offer for Rondo?  Does Smart live up to his potential, or become a bust? Does Rondo come back 100%?  Does Rondo resign? Do we get a fair trade offer for Smart?  Does one of them suffer a serious injury?  Does a way better PG become available?

This is a pretty stupid question because it depends on a lot of things.  The best option is, for now, to keep both of them unless we get a good trade offer.  Let Smart learn from Rondo for now, then decide what to do with Rondo later (like if/when we get a good offer for him, or the end of the season).  We don't know enough about how the season will end up going to decide now.
I'm bitter.

^same boat...Love Rondo, but also have high hopes for Smart, and hope for him to be able to improve and play the 2 so we can keep both, but that's not likely. I would wait out the season first to see who is worth to keep. At this point, I would say Rondo - proven, and established. Long term and just by potential alone, Smart...but you can't put all your eggs in one basket by hoping Smart pans out

Rondo has shown he has the abilities to be one of the top PGs in the NBA.

I want him at PG and Smart to become the SG.  He has the size (weight) to stand up to the NBA SGs.

Smart has not played one nba game yet. You should ask this question next summer.

I wouldn't mind starting Rondo for the next 3 years and then handing the keys off to Smart, either. There's exactly zero reason for this to be a binary thing.

Agreed.
while driving 300 miles for work lat night I had a vision:
It started with a static image of rondo snarling while guarding lbj in the 2012 playoffs.
Then flashed to rondo leading this team to 2 more championships.
He was surrounded by a mostly new cast. Oly was there, young was there.
Ibaka was on the team and we had a monster center running the fast break (looked a lot like Monroe).
Whole thing made me so happy it took me the last 100 miles in a state of anticipation and excitement.
Can't wait for the next phase: let's start with Monroe.

So if rondo signs a 5 year extension, where is he going to be after 3 seasons?

In Boston, presumably.

If Marcus Smart drives 65 miles per hour to Oklahoma, and Kevin Durant drives 55 miles per hour towards Washington, which one will stop for snacks and a novelty gas station hat first?

Rondo is not going to be paid alot of money to come off the bench

Also smart is not going to need 3 seasons before he can take over the drivers seat. You wait that long and he might think about wanting out as soon as he gets the chancd. You think the wolves plan(if the trade goes through) is to have wiggins coming off the bench for 3 seasons?

The issue also that some ppl are missing here is that smart may not look like a starter after his rookie year. But if you sign rondo to the max , then you might never know what smart is capable of with starter min.  If rondo is here another 2 seasons then we can play this thing out but he will want a long term deal for his next contract

Again, this 'either/or' binary seems to have way too many presumptions built into it. There's absolutely no reason not to bring Smart off the bench for his first two or three seasons at this point.

So do you advocate trading Bradley then I assume?

If you asked every GM in the league if "all things equal", who would you rather have for the next 5 years, Smart or Rondo, I suspect everyone would pick Rondo.  Say for example there was an imaginary expansion draft and the GM could pick either Rondo or Smart for the exact same contract and all the other parts of his team were the same.  Of course Rondo would be picked.

The problem is, all things are not equal.  Having Rondo on the team for 5 years takes up money that could be spent on other players so it is really more like do you want Rondo and Smart for the next 5 years or Smart and players X, Y, and/or Z.  Unless you know X, Y, and Z, you cannot answer the question.  (Is this too much like algebra for a sports blog?)
