The Netherlands were the #1 ranked team until about 3 years ago, when they got into a "Group of Death" in the 2012 Euro Cup.  They lost to Germany and Portugal in close games then, so they didn't advance.  Otherwise, they've been stellar.  I think they're a lot better than their FIFA ranking

I meant in this particular game. Spain looked gassed and showed bad body language early in the second half. I'm just trying to understand what this single game performance means for the bigger picture.

Del Bosque and his 'old guard' are cooked.

Xavi has been the best player in all Soccer (forget Adidas and Nike and think about what he's done with Barcelona and Spanish NT), but he's asking for retirement.

Spain always got away with a mediocre attack because of their superiority in midfield and terrific defensive play. That defensive line (Azpilicueta, Piqu?, Ramos and Alba) is the most overrated in years, they can't defend at all. And with Xavi declining (Xabi Alonso is showing signs of that, also), Busquets shows his true colors. Diego Costa, Torres and Villa is not mediocre, is plain bad. Mister Del Bosque, you could have Llorente, Soldado and Negredo out there, but you decided to follow Xavi's advice. You got what you deserve.

Great game by Netherlands, they could've made 8 goals, but Casillas, for all his mistakes, can still make world-class saves.

Spain-Chile will be an interesting match.

Spain's defense has changed almost every WC though. They've lost Puyol and Capdevilla, Arbeola is out of the starting line-up and Ramos has shifted to center. Most would say this is the weakest defensive line they've field in a while. Too adventurous and without a real leader.

Also I don't think Llorente, Soldado or Negredo are the answer as opposed to Villa, Costa and Torres. Torres should just never play in general. But overall, Spain probably aren't at their best when they play a conventional forward.
