Only the 2nd one was clearly on side. I reckon the 1st was more benefit of the doubt.

Why was the second offside?  After the corner kick a defender made a header and the ball went to do Santos who scored.  There can't offside from corner kick and then the ball comes from an opponent.  It s a clear goal

* Luiz Gustavo is in the destroyer role. A lot of teams are shying away from a pure destroyer defensive midfielder as they try to get extra passers into the team to improve build up play. I thought L.Gustavo did a great job shielding the backline and is capable of sliding back into a back 3 when Marcelo and Dani Alves go forward which is very important for team's balance.

Which, to be fair (and as you said before), is because Brazil lacks creativity in midfield. It's not like this was a deliberate tactical decision by Scolari, but more out of necessity, as he needs Marcelo and Alves going forward.

It's interesting when you contrast it with Loew's statement, who said offensive full-backs won't be as important in this particular WC, and in fact plans to field 4 natural CBs to protect the box.

Mexico was impressive, btw. Judging by today's performance, they have a good chance to make it past the group stage.
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

I am doubtful about how well Diego Costa will fit into Spain's lineup.

You can see they are struggling to play to his strengths. Costa has been at his best as a physically powerful counter attacking player. As a target man. Spain don't play that way. And I don't think Diego Costa is a technically gifted enough player (well skilled but not great skill level) to play the way Spain likes their false 9s to play. To get on the ball and join in in the passing movements.

The Netherlands game plan is fairly obvious. Pressure the Spanish midfielders, try to force a dispossession, make the game physical. When they get the ball, advance it as quickly as possible.

This game means nothing though. If the Costa experiment doesn't work out, they could always go back to playing Pedro and Cesc.

I love it!

Great touch, even greater ball control.

Arjen Robben. Spaniards looked at the vortex! Beautiful goal!

Oh my god, Spain down 3-1 to Holland.

If Holland go on and win, as they should, could Chile knock Spain out in the group phase?

The third goal probably should have been a foul. The player that ran into the goalie had no shot at the ball. Although it was a fairly timid play by the keeper.
