There's no reason why he should have gone from that to a lottery pick in this year's draft.

Mike
He played with USA Basketball in the summer where he got his shot off and was effective against a roster of:

Ryan Anderson, Harrison Barnes, Bradley Beal, Mike Conley, DeMarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, DeMar DeRozan, Andre Drummond, Kenneth Faried, Derrick Favors, Paul George, Gordon Hayward, Jrue Holiday, Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Jordan, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Ty Lawson, Damian Lillard, Creighton's Doug McDermott, Greg Monroe, Chandler Parsons, Larry Sanders, Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart, Klay Thompson, Dion Waiters, Kemba Walker, John Wall and Tyler Zeller.

A competitive workout against almost all NBA players does wonders for your draft stock apparently. Then he went to the big east which has better talent than the MVC and maintained his hugely impressive level of play against college competition.

Right?

Mike , the reason I'm not talking about how bad last year's draft was in comparison to this one is that it has little to do with Doug McDermott. Remember what Jay Bilas said during the draft last year? "If this was starting at pick 6, we'd all be raving about how good it was." That's the difference between this year and last year -- this time, there are those five players who're projected to be better than anyone in last year's draft. McDermott was never going to be a top-10 draft pick, so the comparative strengths of those two drafts don't have much to do with this discussion.

If you're a physically limited three year player who's a one-trick pony, your draft stock isn't going to be very high.  That was the initial assessment on McDermott after last year, which is why he didn't declare.

If you're a solid shooter who can do it against NBA players after leading the NCAA in scoring and improving your play after seeing your school end up in a more competitive conference you're going to have a much easier time convincing NBA teams to take a gamble on you. QED.

And if you said that instead of being a smartass, comparing McDermott to Beasley and proclaiming that staying 4 years in school proves he's not any good, none of this would have been necessary.

You compared him to Paul Pierce by virtue of his college numbers.  ::)

Means next to nothing, Laetner played on the Dream Team and we know how good a pro he was folks.

Wow - Lot's of discussion on McDermott. I think we'll find out really quickly how legit the kid is against top tier competition.

I don't know if he's up for it or not. No idea! It's gonna be great to find out though. His draft stock could be super volatile based on how this tourney plays out.

We have different definitions of good.   I would call him decent but hardly good aside for a short stretch of years.   Long career, though.

I hope the kid does well.   I seen him play this weekend and I don't think he will thrive but I wish him well.

I'm rooting for him too, although a little bit less so since he posed as Larry Bird for that SI cover.

Not good good, I agree, Laettner was above average most years. That would be a good value for a mid-round pick, though, right?

Elfrid Payton is guarding McDermott.  Goody.  Hope to see McDermott try to take Payton off the dribble.  Would be very impressive if he could.  Bet he tries to post up, use screens and cut off the ball instead.

Dang it, it doesn't appear that Payton will mark McDermott all game.  I'm disappointed.

McDermott is a scoring machine! Wow! It's one thing to see clips, and another to see him dominate in game. I cant see him escaping the lottery.

The McDermott-Payton matchup has been pretty decent.  Payton hasn't been tracking McDermott as closely as you need to; giving McDermott any space at all is deadly.  He's hit a few jumpers, had a nice few pumpfakes and cuts.  He has a lot of options to go to.  Payton's also won more than a few share of possessions.  He's blocked two of McDermott's shots--a stepback and a putback attempt--and also stole a lob attempt.

Doug is a proven offensive player who is not a defensive bastion but, competent.

Our discussion, I suggest, is Celtics related and I will venture that Dougie McBuckets is not a fit on our team next year.

Olynyk projects as an above average off the bench scorer with fair to middling defensive credentials. Perhaps over the course of an NBA season Doug would score a few more points than Olynyk, but, not enough....(drumroll please) to spend a first rounder on.

Heavens, Stevens needs someone who might actually break out and become an important starter for his team. Someone who can elevate, tangle up opposing bigs and just be an NBA animal on defense. If this player is available with Celtics first round pick number 2? I think our little Bluejay can stay in his tree.

10 scoreless minutes for McDermott in a tight game vs La Lafayette because an athletic defender is on him.

What's he gonna do (or not do) in the pros?
