I agree mcdermott is likely gone by 8-12. Include tj warren in that range also.  Guys like hood, harris, ennis dont stand out and there is little to no reason smart should be picked ahead of mcdermott, warren.

Two other players climbing the charts quickly are nurkic and capela.

Mullin was a better facilitator, worse rebounder.  He played like a 2.  Peaked around 5 assists and a pretty remarkable 2 steals per game.  Dermott plays like a stretch 4 (even though he's only 6-8).  Not much in common IMO.

McDermott alternates between a stretch 4 and a post 4 depending on the matchup and who's gotten switched onto him as he runs through screens.

I don't expect that part of his game to translate. Mullin also had far better handles, McDermott doesn't do much at all off the bounce.

Yep, closer to Nowitski than Mullin.  Too bad he's not 7 ft tall.  :)

I thought Peja Stojakovic was an interesting comp for McDermott.

Here's the thing, McDermott is highly skilled. He would have to be a much worse athlete than he is to not at least be a decent NBA player. Not every NBA player is an elite athlete. This isn't track & field, it's basketball. Just being athletic is useless if you don't have an NBA level skill.

He's not a highly skilled ballhandler or even an average one and that's a big skill set to lack for someone with below-average athleticism.  He's a solid passer but not a highly gifted one either.  He's got fairly diverse scoring arsenal but it's questionable how much it's going to translate.  I can't see him giving defenders the business in the post consistently and if he pump fakes defenders and drive into the paint, there is no way he's going to be a consistent finisher.

That said, he has top 5 spot up shooter/pick and pop option upside.  He could be a huge weapon to complement the core players of a great team.

Exactly, he cannot create a shot.  If you can't do it in college it will be harder in the pros,  I see him as a specialist not a marque player.  He will not last a minute in the pros at the 4.  Lacks size and athletic ability.   Shooting is always at a premium though and he can do that.   Oversized, Steve Kerr is where I project him.

At 6'1'', Kerr was even more lacking in size and athletic ability to play the point in the NBA, yet seemed to make out okay.  Or to look at the other end of the spectrum, Paul Pierce was too slow for the 2 and too small for the 3.

Not that I necessarily think McDermott will be as good as either of those guys but the total disregard for him as a player has gotten to be a bit much.  In contrast with Adam Morrison, who really built his legend by putting up crazy numbers his senior year, McDermott has been performing at a high level and getting better for the last 3 years.

Paul Pierce is too small at SF? He's 6' 7" and has never been a skinny string bean even in college.

McDermott is a shooter and nothing else. Being a great shooter without handles puts a ceiling on what you can do in the NBA.

Going to be very interesting to see if this guy can perform in the tourney and hold up his rep and status as a premiere scorer.

Isn't this enough for us to draft him?

He mentions Bird and Pierce in the same interview!

Every watch Pierce and Artest go at it?  Yes, in an era where a 6'5'' shooting guard is considered average height, a 6'7'' SF is a bit undersized.

Pierce was able to guard LeBron 1.0 as successfully as anyone was able to. So I'm not sure undersized is really the right word.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

How about a Ryan Anderson comparison? Both stretch 4's, not good at creating their own shots, but still bring some value to a team as a starter.

LeBron is 6' 8" and 250, he's probably a bit heavier but not much.

Pierce is 6'7" and 235
Artest is 6'7" and 260

Are you basing your viewpoint of a prototypical SF size on LeBron? Artest and LeBron are probably the two strongest SFs in the most recent era, both are big and bulky guys.

Position average/prototypical height is something like:

PG: 6'2"
SG 6'5"
SF 6'7"
PF 6'9"
C 6'11"

When you're saying Artest was strong enough to bully him that's not a surprise. What SFs didn't Artest push around? Artests was probably the strongest SF in the game till LeBron grew into his body.
