We'd probably be a player or two away from that. With all the draft picks we have it's hard to put a timetable on how long it could take.

That's the real trouble for Ainge, isn't it?

The right deal comes along like it came along for the Rockets, and the Celtics could be back in business next season.

Alternatively, Ainge could have less luck and Rondo could be 31 or 32 before this team is in a position to rumble with the class of the East.

Asik has a $15 million salary-cap hit next season, and that, combined with rival teams' unwillingness to package a quality power forward with an unrestricted first-round draft pick, pushed Morey away from making what he believed would be a bad deal now.
If Morey is really expecting to land someone like Millsap _and_ an unrestricted pick, Asik will still be with the Rockets come end of season.

Houston has ended talks on an Omer Asik trade and plan to keep him for now, league source tells Yahoo Sports.

Woj Yahoo.
good - can only hope this is true.  tired of the trade talk for a defensive-only center.

well, to be totally fair here, asik is considered to be an excellent defender at a position where the celtics are weak. further, his  career rebounding/game projected for 36 minutes is 13.1. his real season average last year was 11.7 rebounds a game over 30 minutes.

he is more than simply a "defensive-only" center.

and just to add to the discussion, asik is now in his 5th year in the league. during his 4th year he averaged 10.1 points/game.

for comparison, our beloved perkins averaged 10.1 points in a season once, his 7th in the league. (2009-10) and perkins NEVER averaged more than 8.1 rebounds/game in a season.

neither guys seem to be offensive dynamos, but asik does show he has the potential to surpass perkins in offense, rebounding, and defense even at his peak.
Not fair to compare Perk to Asik.   When you have THREE hall-of-fame elite scorers on your team, you can afford to have the a couple role playing offensive liabilities filling out the starting lineup.   You add Rondo and Asik next to the likes of Bradley, Sully and Green, not sure how they'll consistently put the ball in the hoop.   WE'll be great defensively... terrible offensively.  Should see a lot of losses where the score is like 88 to 93.

Our offense hasn't been as bad as all of the dire predictions claimed it would be. I doubt that will change much.

He has at least some control over the situation in terms of how aggressive he is on the trade front and how much he offers people.

I agree 100%.  Houston isn't going to get that kind of a deal no matter how many times they say that is what they want.

Anybody else think another reason the tradr didnt go through was bc of the mediocre play by bass last night?

Maybe if he made that last bucket , asik would be here already.

Asik trade dead, he's staying on the Rockets as of 4 minutes ago.

Well, at least it was kind of fun watching two great GMs play chicken with each other

This is a ridicukous attempt at posturing.

The Rockets hold absolutely no leverage. I really don't think the Celts are going to be brokenup over keeping those 2 and a 1st.

Well, like I said yesterday.  Houston would rather let Asik rot on the bench than trade him for a package like Bass and Lee.  They might be desperate, but they are not stupid.

I don't believe this deal is dead yet. They said the same thing this summer with the Nets. Both GM's are hard bargainers

Just wait.  That deal is not likely going anywhere.  Wait and see if another team who wants to be a contender comes with a bigger offer.  Or a team that has a big injury to a big.

Houston has no rush.
Maybe, but in the meanwhile they're on the hook for the salary of a guy that doesn't play, and become less and less tradable by the minute.

Is he shrinking?  Will he be 6'9 when the trade deadline approaches?

Or are his skills deteriorating?

No.  They will gain leverage because there is a true deadline that effects the other teams as well.

This GM built his team by being patient.  Why is he going to stop being that now?

The longer Houston waits, the more expensive asik becomes per game. For example, if they trade asik this summer, Houston will have only spent 5 million to keep him. But his new team will be on the hook for 15 million next year, without the benefit of playing asik for half a year at half of 5 million.

Also asik will be entering a contract year, where he could bolt after being paid those 15 million dollars.

I agree that Houston should wait. Maybe a team will have an injury or become desperate at the February trade deadline. If they wait until the summer, then his value drops in my opinion.

I can't subscribe to the theory, the longer he goes without playing his price will go up.  Have his skills diminished?  Probably if he can't even get on the court for the Rockets. A bunch of DNP CDs don't do anything for his value.

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/writer/...-real-deadline

After backing out of trade talks for Omer Asik on Thursday, the Rockets are faced with the same dilemma they had before: Two months to trade their unhappy center.

So, nothing really changed except that Thursday's self-imposed deadline to satisfy the Turkish big man's trade request wasn't much of a deadline.

And the teams Houston was dealing with knew it.

League sources say Asik's new agent, Arn Tellem of Wasserman Media Group, left Houston Thursday morning after efforts to get his client routed to greener pastures -- Boston, for example -- did not come to fruition. Houston GM Daryl Morey's desire to move Asik by Thursday so he could subsequently repackage any players involved before the Feb. 20 trade deadline did not outweigh the paucity of unattractive deals on the table.

Rival executives were dubious from the beginning of a scenario that would've sent Asik to Boston for Brandon Bass, Courtney Lee and a first-round pick. Bass and Lee are two contracts that Celtics GM Danny Ainge is trying to unload, and league sources say he'd probably have to give up a draft pick to find a taker for Lee, anyway. So a deal that would also shed Bass and bring in Asik, a defensive center who is only 27, would be "a great deal for them," one executive said.

If that was the deal Morey wanted, it would've been done already. Clearly, it wasn't. One person familiar with Morey's thinking said the Houston GM did not covet Bass or Lee, and likely only considered such a deal if he could have flipped one or both of them in future deals. Of course, A) he couldn't do that unless he acquired them by Thursday under NBA rules, and B) league sources say the market for both players would've been minimal, anyway.

So, having tried to create a market for Asik with this fictitious Thursday deadline -- another mundane negotiating dance being characterized as a "sweepstakes" -- Morey hoped another team would step up with a sweeter offer. Perhaps his old buddy and co-worker, Sixers GM Sam Hinkie, would oblige by offering Thaddeus Young. Maybe Hawks GM Danny Ferry would throw Paul Millsap's name into the mix -- though, if he was bidding against a package of Bass and Lee, it's not clear why he would do that. And evidently, Ferry didn't, because the Rockets would've have ended the talks on Thursday.

Cleveland was volunteered as a potential suitor, except that it wasn't -- not in a deal that would involve Anderson Varejao, the player the Rockets wanted. There was even a "mystery" or "wild-card" team -- oooooh, tell me more -- but that one never came to fruition, either. Let's just say that when that supposed team was identified as the Portland Trail Blazers, I didn't even have to make a phone call to know that it wasn't them.

The truth is, Morey made a valiant effort to do his job -- create a market for a player he has to trade. It's not going to work now -- as of 2:10 p.m. ET on Dec. 19 -- but that doesn't mean it won't work eventually. The simple fact is that there is no such thing as ending trade talks on Dec. 19. There are only two things that end trade talks: 1) a trade, and 2) the trade deadline.

Both scenarios remain in play.

Just goes ti show the Woj isn't always right. Asik is not a $15 million cap hit next year. His salary is $15 million but the cap hit is only $8.4 million
