Houston has ended talks on an Omer Asik trade and plan to keep him for now, league source tells Yahoo Sports.

Woj Yahoo.

So does this mean, Houston will start playing asik again? What a mess. For the sake of the teammates and coach, they need resolution.

I like that ainge has held firm on his 4 quarters for a crinkled dollar offer. The celtics aren't desperate for asik. If they get him, cool. If not, whatever. Another center will be found in the next 3 years.

Houston's GM has too much pride to take Ainge's opportunistic offer so he's willing to make a bad situation worse.

I think some GMs just fall in love with themselves to the point where they never want to do a trade unless they're clearly coming out on top. This would've been a good trade for us and a slight loss but still a fair trade for them.

Houston really screwed up and doesn't want to admit it... posturing. Latest Woj tweet has them buying time. Buying time for what? They're never going to have leverage, everyone knows they need to trade this guy and they gave him an awful contract. Rockets big mistake was not trading him instantly after getting Howard.

I bet they bite on a trade soon once Morey realizes it's a lost cause and keeping him is worse than the position they're already in. But seriously who didn't see this coming. You expect Millsap and Hawes? That's a joke they're lucky they have our offer truthfully.

I doubt the offers improve by the deadline because the Rockets have no leverage. They have 2 options trade him right now or keep having a disgruntled player until the deadline.

Exactly.

What leverage are they regaining between now and the deadline? None.

Has there ever been a trade negotiation that didn't hit the eleventh hour walking away from the table bluff stage?

Houston needs to buy more time to find a deal. Rockets weren't dealing from a place of leverage now, and rest of league knew it.
I'm at a loss at how the Rockets think they'll ever deal from a "place of leverage" in this. They have a disgruntled player whom they can't fit in their lineup, and who's making a ton of money over the next season and two thirds.

NBA source confirms #celtics-#rockets talks dead. Source says they weren't as strong as circulated. @WojYahooNBA reported Asik stays for now

As I've always said, media = joke.

Not really surprised.  Asik may not want to play for the Rockets, but he's a legit seven footer who can anchor a defense.  The Rockets shouldn't sell so low on him.  Two MLE-level role players and a late 1st is way below his value.

good - can only hope this is true.  tired of the trade talk for a defensive-only center.

well, to be totally fair here, asik is considered to be an excellent defender at a position where the celtics are weak. further, his  career rebounding/game projected for 36 minutes is 13.1. his real season average last year was 11.7 rebounds a game over 30 minutes.

he is more than simply a "defensive-only" center.

and just to add to the discussion, asik is now in his 5th year in the league. during his 4th year he averaged 10.1 points/game.

for comparison, our beloved perkins averaged 10.1 points in a season once, his 7th in the league. (2009-10) and perkins NEVER averaged more than 8.1 rebounds/game in a season.

neither guys seem to be offensive dynamos, but asik does show he has the potential to surpass perkins in offense, rebounding, and defense even at his peak.

Let's not start this one again. Perkins was 19 years old when he joined the Celtics, Asik was five years older in his rookie season.

Because he is a strong, 7 foot defender/rebounder.

And because the only thing they are giving up is the ability to trade what they get for him this season.

If you were the Rockets, would you rush the trade so you can have time to try and trade Lee or Bass?

Just wait.  That deal is not likely going anywhere.  Wait and see if another team who wants to be a contender comes with a bigger offer.  Or a team that has a big injury to a big.

Houston has no rush.

Asik is a very nice player.  If we were a defensive anchor away from being competitive in the playoffs against the Pacers / Heat, I'd be very much in favor of trading assets for him.

But I don't think the team is there, yet.  Still a couple years away from being at that point.
