This is basically KG for DeAndre + 2 first rounders. The Doc part is not really included in the trade, right? It's just an agreement if this trade commences.

How hard is that for the NBA to comprehend? Im confused...

So you are saying that the Celtics can't require compensation to let Doc out of his contract to go to Clippers?

If you aren't, than things are as simple as you want them to be. Using Doc as leverage in trade discussions regarding KG would be problematic.

Boston cannot give up any of their future picks because those are going to be lottery picks. I would force Doc to retire and not let him coach anywhere else.

I would tell KG play your contract or retire. I would buy PP out

I understood its tinkering in the Chris Paul trade last year:  the league owned the team, and should have control over the package it gets.

Here, even though I don't like this trade, it appears that the NBA is messing with us just for the sake of doing so, to exert its power.

Allegedly the argument that the league is making is that KG -- who just led the playoffs in rebounding, and who is an elite defender -- isn't worth DeAndre Jordan and two #1s by himself.  That's laughable.

This is stupid and you know we went too far to just walk away, so basically were back to square one getting hosed.

I suspect no matter what we had offered, they would have said we need to offer more just because of how sketchy the situation is with potentially leveraging Doc's value to get more for KG.

Maybe Stern and Sterling are actually super secret friends.  And Sterling told Stern to shoot this down, so Sterling could tell Paul that he doesn't have any blood on his hands, in the hopes of tricking Paul into staying anyways.  I really don't think Sterling wants to pay Doc.

I mean, Stern helped Sterling get Paul in the first place. 

Come on, this is at least as believable as Stern rigging the lottery, right?

Good, we can't get bent over here if Doc wants to leave then leave. It's real easy for Doc to return though guys, he's got a good mouthpiece and he can easily just say he wanted to stay only to keep the band together and that's probably what Ainge will end up doing.

I'm pretty sure that's just conjecture from USA Today.  From Stern's quotes and the situation, I think the league's issue is you can't trade a player and a coach, not that the Clips are giving up too much for just KG.

This is my "conspiracy" take on it:

It was reported that league lawyers told them DAYS ago this trade wouldn't work (that wasn't leaked for some reason).

I think that this is a way for Sterling to tell CP3 "Look my hands are tied, I tried to get you what you wanted but that doggone Stern wouldn't let us."

For Ainge and Doc, if they wanted to bring the gang back Ainge could say "Look I tried to explore ALL options, even getting rid of our coach, but it didn't work. Doc never wanted to leave he was only doing what he thought would help us"

And what authority does the league have to rule if a trade is legal or not outside of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. According to trade checker, KG for Deandre Jordan works (even with Jordan's trade kicker of 3.2 million). So what remains is the value of draft pick exchanges. The Doc Rivers situation is different. He could be let go of his contract if he wants to something else. The Clippers get a fill in coach for two months, fire him and hire Doc Rivers and they still have to compensate the Celtics with a 1st round pick.

And now everyone knows the Celtics will buy out Pierce if not traded on draft night (Which could easily happen) and he becomes a FA and presumably he would sign with the Clippers.

From our perpective, the Celtics became a mess and running it back with the same cast of characters was not likely to work. So Danny is trying to blow this up and get back to being competitive. The thing that makes me angry is the league meddling in our business again.

I am already seething mad at Stern for stiffing Seattle earlier this spring and have watched very little of the NBA Finals and non of the Conference playoffs after the Celtics were eliminated. David Stern is running this league into the ground.

Apparently Stan van Gundy got sent to Orlando in a pretty similar transaction -- Miami got a pick and the right to swap picks with Orlando.

Not sure why this is any different -- perhaps the league thinks you there has be some sort of consideration coming from the Celtics other than agreeing to release Doc.

USA Today isn't exactly the most reputable source of news information but I wouldn't be shocked if Stern pulled this. He's a huge Celtics fan if you didn't notice!
