There have been complaints about this deal from around the league since details became public. It's David Stern's job to uphold the rules

My "conspiracy" take on it... the league will try to delay it until next week so it doesn't overshadow Game 7 of the Finals (the NBA Superbowl).  KG and Doc going to the Clippers is a big story... no need to have it happen on the same day as the biggest game of the year.   Use that publicity pop between Game 7 and the Draft.

Common sense says the "complaints" are coming from teams like Atlanta, Dallas and Houston who have dreams of Chris Paul and Dwight Howard dancing in their heads.  No brainer what the motivation is there.

Likewise, you could combine this with my post from above and say that the league has a vested interest in Chris Paul reaching free agency.  The non-stop media circle surrounding "Dwight and Chris Paul?" can carry the NBA publicity machine all Summer.  If this trade goes down on the same day as the NBA Superbowl, we're looking at a pretty dull offseason from a marketing standpoint.

I wouldn't say that's a conspiracy at all.  It's totally logical and I saw a report last week saying the NBA would tell Danny and whoever the GM of LAC is to keep talks hush-hush until the Finals ended.

Maybe we can use this as a reason to put Terry or Lee in the deal?

That's my current hope.

The deal could still get done, but one of two adjustments may need to be made: the Celtics may need to offer more in the deal than just Garnett, with draft picks the most logical possibility; the Clippers, who have been attempting to give up just one first-round draft pick, may be allowed to give up less in the trade. The real trade value of the 37-year-old is at the center of this discussion, as the idea that Boston could net two first-round draft picks and a respectable replacement in Jordan who is 13 years younger clearly doesn't calculate for league officials.

If this trade is completed, it's expected that Pierce would be bought out by Boston this summer and sign with the Clippers as a free agent. Pierce, a Los Angeles native, is only guaranteed $5 million of his $15.3 million earnings for next season if he's cut before June 30.

Yeah, we're just giving up our head coach, KG, and eventually Pierce.  We should totally have to give up more than that to get Jordan and two 1sts!

If the league exepcts us to give up draft picks and get less in return from the Clippers, Ainge should definitely walk away.

Not worth it at all.

KG for DJ and two 1st round picks is only just barely palatable as it is.

Wish stern would get this involved concerning some strange calls by his officials that factor into outcome of games and point spreads. I will say he got very involved when it came time to sweep Tim Donaghy's allegations.

Great so now the league is dictating what value players have for teams they don't own.

No this doesn't make much sense.  The NBA can't set a precedent that they dictate what is considered "appropriate" value in a trade.  Legally, the Heat can trade LeBron James for Brook Lopez if it meets salary regulations.

The Hornets thing didn't count, because the NBA was acting owner.  The NBA can't say "DeAndre is too much for KG" or "KG is too much for DeAndre".  That's nonsense.  And even if they did, they can't dictate what constitutes appropriate value to make it match.  They can't say "boston needs to give up a draft pick for this to be even".   WHy a draft pick?  Why not Jason Terry?  What one team might consider an overpaid albatross of a contract... another might consider a valuable high-level bench player with championship experience and a history of winning. The is no way the rationalization is literally "DeAndre is too much for KG", otherwise every single trade would be under scrutiny.  Revolk the James Harden trade... the Rockets didn't give up enough.   Send Pau back to Memphis... LA didn't give up enough.  Etc.

Do they have the authority to dictate what is appropriate compensation for releasing a coach from his contract?  Has anyone ever done that?  Is that even legal?

  • It's all about the TEAM!
Since I have become emotionally detached since I became disappointed and upset this all happened in the first place, I find I'm enjoying watching how it becomes a struggle for both teams more than I care about the actual outcome.

I've pretty much lost much faith in the 2013/14 season being nothing more than a lame duck season for us one way or another as it builds for something greater down the road. And while I will always be a long term and faithful die-hard fan of the Celtics til my grave. I think it's time to get into sit back and watch mode and start putting my greater expectations off for at least another season. Enjoy seeing the deal be "problematic". Enjoy seeing DA try and work something out of the ashes of whatever remains of this team once all of this is OVER.

Enjoy seeing the Clippers try and make it work or not work and maybe (unsure yet) become a semi-fan of theirs (far below the Celtics btw) as they near the playoffs. Part of me hopes it all blows up in the Clippers/Doc and slightly (if he goes through with it, which he looks like he will) KG's face. But would rather expect if they get close to the WCF, I would start cheering them on if it came to that. But only below a Celtics fan standard. As a fan of our old players riding off into the sunset somewhere else and hoping they leave the game happy and fulfilled for giving us so much entertainment and great memories while with us.

I done gave up on a good outcome for us here and we may end up getting a decent one in the end. But I've become emotionally detached to it all. Instead, I will enjoy watching the circus and try and let it entertain me. I find it's far easier on my emotions to just sit back and watch and be predisposed to not liking how this went but enjoy it for the entertainment value it surely is to fans of the NBA who are not Celtics/Clippers/KG/Doc/PP/DA fans.

In the end, the drama show might be more entertaining for me than what we put on the floor in 2013/14. But I have high hopes DA is going to rise up and I want to watch that with Great Venom!

Great so now the league is dictating what value players have for teams they don't own.

"Clippers, you don't really want Kevin Garnett as much as you think you do."

"Celtics, you don't value Kevin Garnett as much as you think you do.  He's not like, the most important part of your franchise, or anything."
