So Shane Vereen is back today. For some reason, every time I hear Shane Vereen, I think of Ben Vereen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TdtxsggoT8

Getting Vereen back will be a big boon to the offense which already seems to be on the up & up. Will had a dimension that has been lacking for most of the season (pass receiving RB failsafe and screen game).

I just wish the defense was getting some guys back.  Unfortunately, those guys (outside of Talib) are all out for the year.

Classic bad matchup game for the Pats.  Just like the Bengals game, the Jets game, the last two Super Bowls . . . can't match up with big physical teams that dominate the time of possession.

Also like that Jets game back in 2010 -- fail to force a turnover, defense can't come up with old fashioned stops when it matters.

Bit of a hosejob against the Pats at the end. Interference is interference ... or so I thought.

Then again, if that Pats had come up with something in their first three possessions, that last play might not have mattered. Pats just can't score consistently from the red zone.

It did, didn't it? Bad penalties, not forcing turnovers, not scoring in the red zone. Injuries have certainly hurt them, but certain flaws seem to never change with them.

50/50 calls are just that, 50/50 calls.  Can't depend on them to win games, and if you lose a game because of one, well, you should have put yourself in a better position.

The Panthers fit the mold of the type of team that manhandles the Patriots.   They're going to be a legit playoff team this year.  I could see them going deep with the formula they have.

The Pats don't have the pieces on defense to make up for the inconsistent offense.  Brady just doesn't have the weapons, even with Gronk and Amendola and Vereen healthy.

I think this is similar to the Doc Rivers / Big 3 Celtics.  They are who they are.  This is their identity.  We won't see it change until Bill and Tom are gone, and at that point we'll be missing the good 'ol days.

I'm not sure if Bill and Tom are gonna win anything before they retire.  Not looking good right now.  But these Patriots teams all have a very similar identity.  If they are going to get anywhere they'll have to get lucky and win despite those things, not because they changed.

Why can't refs be incompetent in the middle of Pats games instead of on the single most important play at the very end? Why does this keep happening?

Most important part was that no Pats got hurt. Better than a win.

Talib was out on the last defensive play due to his hip injury.

So that's definitely bad news.  Talib still not himself.  Like Amendola, I'd guess we don't see Talib at 100% for the rest of the year.

I agree that they should've put themselves in a better position than the one they were in on the last play, but I'm not sure that was a 50/50 call. The DB had Gronk just about wrapped up.

The announcers had a former official on hand, and he said that no call was the correct call because, since the ball was intercepted, Gronk had no chance to catch it, thus no interference. But I've seen interference called away from the ball, so I don't see why this wouldn't have been a penalty.

You make a good point, though, in comparing the Brady/Belichick Patriots to the Doc/New Big 3 C's—they have a certain way of doing things, for good and for bad, and it isn't likely to change. I, too, think the Brady/Belichick Pats are done winning Super Bowls—and they may not even make it to another one. Certainly not this season with half their defense missing.

Oh, and Kyle Arrington can go play somewhere else. I know the Pats are woefully thin in the secondary, but this guy still gets playing time when they have plenty of DBs, and I've never understood that. He's pretty bad.

Eh, I'm not really upset on that last play. It should've never came down to that .

The thing that bugged me was when McDaniels decided to throw it on 3rd & 1 after the Pats had been running it down the Panthers' throats well in the 2nd half. Instead, incomplete pass on & they settle for a FG there and you see what happened. Stupid play call and trying to get too pretty there, IMO.

Oh, they were quite incompetent on the middle of that game, too, when an identical situation was called a holding(?!) on McCourty. I guess some consistency is too much to ask for.

But yes, between the fumble, the personal foul penalty, and the questionable 3rd and 1 passing play there is plenty of blame to pass around here regardless.
