If Ferry wanted to give Smith a max deal, he would have done it already. I don't see Smith re-signing with the Hawks. He's going to Houston or Dallas, with Phoenix as a darkhorse.

http://www.hoopsworld.com/nba-am-wholl-have-salary-cap-space-in-2013/

smith will almost certainly get more $ in Atl than anywhere else...

Atlanta Hawks – $18.483 million in salary commitments
The Hawks are set up to be massive cap players in July. They will have to work out the contract situations with Jeff Teague and Josh Smith, but beyond those two almost everyone else is expendable, giving the Hawks what could be as much as $30 million to spend depending on how they manage their rookie scale contracts and pending free agents. New Hawks GM Danny Ferry has been preaching that his moves this summer were about positioning for July of 2013, so it is safe to say the Hawks plan to be aggressive and they should have ample money to pull it off.

Of that bunch Milwaukee Bucks, Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Hornets, Toronto Raptors, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Clippers could realistically have $10 million or more to spend in July of 2013 depending on how they manage their team options and free agent cap holds.

That's right, they are clearing cap space to spend in on players that they believe are worth spending it on, not on Josh Smith, The Hawks are going to make a strong run at Dwight Howard.

if i'm the hawks...i'm taking a close look at DH's medical records...

if i'm larry drew...i have stan van gundy on speed dial...in the immortal words of dr phil...how's that working for you...lol...

Dwight Howard has been putting up great numbers on a surging lakers team the last few weeks. He is by far the #1 free agent target this summer, and guaranteed to get a max deal.

He is the only free agent on the market who is worth building a team around.

I don't think you will find many NBA GMs that don't agree with that.

here's the best way to look at it...the best 2 comps on the c's are rondo and green...would you take jones, wright and crowder for rondo or green?  NO WAY...There would be a mutiny!

I think there is a distinct minority on this board who would be outraged if they found out that Ainge turned down a deal of Rondo for Crowder and a useful big like Wright, especially if they thought it would have meant booting Bass out of the starting lineup.

Dallas Mavs

OJ Mayo / 35.7 minutes / Guard
Dirk / 30.8 minutes / Forward / 34 yrs old
Darren Collison / 30.6 minutes / Guard
Shawn Marion / 29.9 minutes / Forward / 34 yrs old
Vince Carter / 25.4 minutes / Guard-Forward / 36 yrs old
Chris Kaman / 22.9 minutes / Center /
Elton Brand / 22.2 minutes / Forward / 34 yrs old
Jae Crowder / 17.0 minutes / Forward
Brandan Wright / 15.0 minutes / Center - Forward
Dahntey Jones / 12.7 minutes / Forward

that's your 8th 9th and 10th rotation players playing behind 4 guys that are all 34 or older on a team that is 11th in the West with a 28 - 33 record

Amazing how you ignore the most important factor, that Rondo is not only signed to a long term deal, but a very team friendly long term deal at that.

If Smith was signed to the same deal as Rondo, then you would be able to get great value in a deal for him. Instead, he's, well, he's an unrestricted free agent who has stated he wants a max deal but in 9 seasons has never made the all-star team.

We will see in a few months when Josh Smith signs his next contract. I think you will be pretty disappointed...i mean happy...i mean disappointed...lol... at what the hawks get in return, if anything, and what Smith gets for a contract...lol...lol..lol...

You cannot compare trading Josh Smith to trading Rondo. If Smith was on a long term deal at Rondo's annual salary, he would be valuable. As an unrestricted FA who wants a max deal, he is not. It is what it is.

I would sign Smith to a Rondo type of deal, but not to a max deal.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1538937-6-nba-teams-guaranteed-to-target-josh-smith-in-2013-free-agency

The 2013 NBA trade deadline came and went, and Josh Smith is still in an Atlanta Hawks uniform despite wide-spread speculation that the Hawks would accept the best available offer to prevent getting nothing at all.

Apparently, Hawks GM Danny Ferry felt that it would be better to roll the dice on a potential sign-and-trade this summer than to sacrifice Smith for pennies on the dollar.

To be sure, there will be a number of teams in the bidding to obtain Smith as a free agent. But only a handful of teams are realistic targets for Smith, who was reported by Ken Berger of CBS Sports.com to be seeking a max contract this summer.

we'll see how good danny ferry and josh smith's agent are...

I may have mentioned this before but my dog was offered a job writing for bleacherreport. She glanced at a few articles and decided she'd stick with eating dog food before she'd post anything on that website. guaranteed-to-target-Josh-Smith = "I don't have any idea whether this is true or not".

fyi...

they're doing something right...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleacher_Report

Bleacher Report was acquired by Turner Broadcasting System (a subsidiary of Time Warner) in August 2012 for an undisclosed sum reportedly near $200 million.[6] CEO Brian Grey has headed the company since July 2010.

Maybe. I shudder to think that people actually watch half the shows on the tv listings. The people that make those shows are doing something right as well but I'd be hard-pressed to say what it was.

Dwight Howard is nowhere near a "coach killer". I'm sure Drew would be ecstatic to have a player like Howard on the team he coaches. Deron Williams on the other hand is another story.

Yea, I don't know about "coach killer". More like "i want a bad reputation".

Yea, no one ever accused Dwight of being smart at how to handle PR, but he's not a coach killer.

I'm surprised you haven't posted a fictional conversation about Dwight Howard working for Al Qaeda yet. Is that next on your list?

I was surprised to see he'd take the time to type all of that, more surprised that he'd done it twice.
